Gamecat235 politely pointed out that the SL63 AMG came with a V8. Which I recalled after posting it. Sooo. I decided to go have a sandwich and stop and see if the car was still there. It was and it is a SL65 AMG with a V12 Biturbo. SR20 available now. Turns out the car belongs to a Cardiologist in the same building.

Kumho tires on there...interesting choice. Certainly budget minded.
Too bad it's not a Renntech. Those things are batshit insane. This one is just plain insane.

he clearly bought it used. Which raises the question of what one would trade an SL65 AMG for in the Lexus line?

of course. These things bomb with depreciation though. Hopefully an LX though. Got sick of the snow the past few years down there!

Agree. When I saw that I figured he bought it used. What a cheapo. I would not care if I was not the first, though.

It's interesting about the tires. When I was shopping for tires for my motorcycle, the place I deal with, which sells a lot of tires said I should consider the Kumho brand. $30 cheaper than the Dunlops that I usually buy. I must say I have been quite impressed with the quality and handling and wet traction so far.

Many dealers buy from auctions to fill out their inventories.

Kuhmo tires are not bad, I have nothing against them. I've driven a few very high powered cars that hooked up quite well with them.
I just find it interesting, compared to Pilot Super Sports that I see on most of the SL cars.
The SL600 I drive has a set of Hankook V12 Evos on it. They're great tires, also more budget minded compared to the Super Sports.
I think it says more about either the owners knowledge, or the shops knowledge that services it. In a good way, that is.

The SL65 is a niche product. I can't imagine many dealers are too hot to buy something that may only appeal to one customer in a town.

Because people are the worst, one can only assume it was traded in on something horrible. Like an RX Hybrid, GS, or LS.

since you seem to know more about tire brands than me, would you be nice enough to help me with the following choice?
I have 18" sumitomo summer tires currently, and I need new ones soon. I was looking at contenintals, and Dunlop's. I would be more than willing to try a brand not stated. I only have 3 requirements
1. Summer tires (snowed once every 3-5 years here)
2. Good grip
3. OKAY wear rating
I tried calling my local tire shops and they only would recommend what they had in stock (go figure).

Hard to say. But with the Sandia National Lab and Air Force Research facility here, There are a lot of people who have made a lot of money off them.

Well, budget will make the difference for everything. My car calls for 225/60R18 tires. I was told upside and backwards to go for bridgestone or continentals, and I just couldn't justify the cost of contis, nor did I want to settle for bridgestones. I have a 380ishHP HEMI, and I want the tires to last. Apparently it can be a lot to ask for.
Not knowing what size tires you need, I would suggest looking at Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals, Cooper Zeons, or even Toyo tires. The Firestones are all season, but are very durable. Coopers are also all season (sorry, I default to all seasons), but the Zeons are more performance oriented. They'll do the job, but as far as tires go, Coopers are a little noisier than other brands. Toyos are a mixed bag, I don't know their offerings very well, but I know a guy who has a Cheetah and he runs Toyos all around, and hasn't had a problem yet. Kumho and Hankook have been making great sets of tires lately, so I wouldn't discount them either. But basically, to give you a better answer, I'd have to know what size tire you're looking to run, because there are some great tires out there that aren't expensive, but they aren't available in some sizes.
Michelin and Continentals are typically more expensive than all other brands, but I can hardly justify that kind of cost for most people. Tires can last a long time when rotated properly, but if you run a staggered set, that introduces a few other issues (rotating doesn't matter because you can't rotate them, etc).
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

Is that an Audi I see as your avatar, or something else? Just wondering whether it's AWD or RWD of FWD.

It could definitely be from an auction. In my experience used car managers at dealers are usually, to put it nicely, retarded. For example, my used car manager just picked up a 10 year fuchsia old tiburon with high miles and peeling paint and breaks that don't work. He thinks it's a brilliant idea. Moron.

It is AWD, and yes it is an Audi.
