What's the point of double door refrigerators with no ice machines?

To me, ice water is an American right. Are the aforementioned fridges a communist ploy?

No idea.....we have no ice maker, but we have an ice box and that makes up for it.

Probably for people with my house. Good sized kitchen, shitty setup. The water supply is on one side, and the only sane place for a fridge is on the opposite end of the kitchen.

I could run some pipe under the floor, but the that's a lot of dough. Besides, our city water tastes awesome, and the freezer can hold enough ice cube trays.

LOL. I completely agree that they are pointless. That said... I recently purchased the exact one in the lead pic. I was remodeling my rental house and the tenant specifically requested this layout of refrigerator with NO ice dispenser. It does have an internal ice maker tho.

Side note: I didnt know this, but you can negotiate prices on appliances at Home Depot and other places. I purchased the whole 4pc set and got it all for about 30% off.

Communist, is a heavy word son. Hence the Cold war. They fought for cold ice water machines. America won BTW

That makes sense, although I haven't seen many houses with no water outlet behind the fridge.

As you stated: Communists. You now have a foolproof method for identifying them.

It wasn't a dealbreaker, honestly. My parents bought a fridge one time, and the icemaker and water dispenser both went out at about a day after the warranty expired.

Besides, we really have good city water. I drink faucet water at other places and forget that we actually have good water.

There's that, too. Sounds like a regular infestation.

My mom has a fancy fridge like the one you have pictured that dispenses near frozen water from a hole in the side of the pillar between the doors. You open one side and there is a button and a hole. Put your cup up to the hole and hit the button and BOOM! Ice water streams into your cup. With the doors closed it looks identical to the one you have pictured.

I would assume to save money. Like stated before, some kitchens are just not set up to run water lines to the fridge so if you don't want to go through the work to do it why should they bother putting the system in?

I would bet that at some spot in the construction of the fridge there are parts of the system in place though, whether it is gaps in the frame or insulation to let the lines in. Probably just a special door they throw on the ones they want to have the water/ice in.

If I can't get my damn ice and water straight from the refrigerator door, then I have failed at life.

We have a fridge like that, with an ice machine. We bought it even though at the time there was no water supply for it because we believe in FREEDOM.

Subsequently, I ran a water supply line myself, which meant even MORE FREEDOM. It is these little things that help keep communism at bay.

Isn't the point so when you open the door, its a smaller opening and thus less cold air gets let out? Ice maker is kind of a separate issue...

This is my speculation:

So you, Mr appliance engineer, design a two-door fridge with a water dispenser on one of them. Then, you would like to design another, lower level fridge without a dispenser. This plan is abandoned, however, when your boss decides that your time is better spent making sure that the new microwaves will break in 2 years. So they take your existing design, delete the water dispenser, and sell it to the poor people.

But many of the big, fancy ones have no ice/water dispensers.

They're just less big and fancy than the dispensing models.

Shorter door-swing helps if you have clearance concerns, especially if you have a newer fridge space that is wider than the old standard. I designed and built my own kitchen, so it works fine with the older standard, but I could see it making a difference in some properties.
