With all the crash test videos running around I want to present an old idea I've brought up a couple times. Motorcycles are not as bad compared to cars as people think. Before everyone gets their torches and pitchforks ready hear me out.
The idea is not so much that motorcycles are safer today (although they are with more advanced rider and bike safety gear like airbags) it's that cars are more dangerous than most of us care to think about.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think the majority of drivers take the idea that their car is safe for granted and don't even look into how badly it can go. It's something we put into the back of our mind as we rush around all the many places we have to go.

Really only enthusiasts realize how dangerous stuff is. That and people who've experienced bad accidents.

Personally I keep considering a roll cage with a 5 point harness and hans with a helmet for my everyday commute.

Cars are scary, just do the physics and its eye opening.

You linked a vid showing MotoGP crashes. The things that make most of those look not-that-bad are the fact that they take place in a controlled environment, everybody is wearing top-of-the-line safety equipment (airbag suits, etc), and everybody there has tons of experience crashing. The only exception are the shots where somebody goes down in the middle of a group, which are downright scary.
Compare this to some jagoff driving home from the bar on his Harley wearing a t-shirt and no helmet. The simple low-sides where the rider bounces right up and starts kicking the dirt in anger are instead replaced by Mr Harley guy at best being covered in road rash, at worst out cold / dead from bonking his head.
In other words, context is important to the discussion.

Obviously riding a Harley with no gear while drinking isn't safe or ideal. Neither is driving a Chinese car high on opiates with no seat belts or airbags. In case you missed the entire point I was stating not that motorcycles are safer today but cars are far more dangerous than people care to think about.

Depending on context. There's definitely a difference between the safety of a subcompact Chinese deathtrap and a new Volvo station wagon, along the same lines as the difference in safety between a MotoGP rider and a drunk guy on a Harley.

I think every car should come with a roll cage with a racing seat and harness. My parents think its an idiotic idea.

Well the downside is if you don't use all the equipment on every single trip then you are severely reducing your safety.
