Does anybody here who uses the heel and toe technique when downshifting/braking/turning actually use their heel to blip the throttle when braking? Cuz I always just use the right side of my foot on the gas and the left edge of my foot on the brake.

Like so:

Kinja'd!!!

Maybe this is easier for me because I have size 13 feet and they tend to turn outward naturally. Plus the pedals in my 335xi are pretty much perfect in terms of brake/accelerator placement for me.

This just looks so uncomfortable to me:

Anyway, was just curious about your thoughts or if I'm the only one who prefers to Heel & Toe this way?

It totally depends on the car's pedal placement. I usually use the side of my foot like you, but I have been in older race cars with pedal spacing that required using the heel (or at least the side of it).

Likewise, size 13 feet here, and side-stepping the gas is much easier for me. Also, the spacing between my gas and brake pedals is pretty close.

I wear a size 11, and I do toe on brake, heel on gas. Unless I'm wearing massive boots, in which case I do the sidestep.

I'ma drummer too, but it depends on how close the pedals are. If they're close enough I'll do the half & half. If they're farther apart, gotta swing the heel over.

What am I, made of feet?

Here I've been making excuses for myself because of bad pedal placement and big feet but if all you size 13s can do it than I should probably be able to do it in my 15s.

I generally will do like you do, but if I do turn my foot it is generally with the heel on the brake and the toes on the throttle. My right foot turns better that way.

Haha. Not my feet or picture. Just a stock image I found to illustrate my point. I rock shell toe Superstars. And they're always immaculate. Until winter hits...

Yeah, that makes more sense to me. Twisting my ankle like in the second picture just feels...wrong.

I have to roll my ankle, and use the side of my foot. I can't move my knee at all because it will hit the back of the steering wheel, so lifting my heel to rotate it over is a non-starter. I've tried many ways to get the sole of my shoe on both pedals, but it just doesn't fit for me, so the side it is.

I do it the same as you. Keeping the heel planted makes precise control inputs a lot easier.

Yes, agreed. For me at least it makes it easier to feed in just the right amount of gas and rotate between brake and accelerator.

depends on the car, in some there is more room and thus heel is better, in some side of foot works better.

There's no right way. All drivers and all cars are different. Just do what seems easier.

In my old E46 330xi, the pedal placement was awful for heel-toe. The only possible way to do it was with huge feet and the right/left edge technique that you use, and since I have small feet, I never heel-toed. The gas and brake need to be about even with each other, but most cars' brake pedals are higher than the gas, making it hard to rev match unless you're literally mashing the brake into the carpet so it's in line with the recessed gas pedal.

Most track day bros put a pedal extender thingy on the gas pedal to make it easier to hit the throttle. A good number of them will also "raise" the placement of the gas pedal by only installing the pedal kit on the gas pedal.

Ze Germans are pretty good with the pedal placement for this. The bottom hinge gas pedal is key to your success here. I wear 13s as well, and do the ball of my foot on the brake, then just kinda roll it to the right to hit the gas.

My brake and fuel pedals are not close enough to do this on my car. My foot could slip behind the brake and then I'd be in deep crap closing in on some stopped cars.

Yup. Definitely prefer bottom hinged to top hinged now.

Cuz I always just use the right side of my foot on the gas and the left edge of my foot on the brake.

That is a convenient way of doing it, but it doesn't work on all cars, and also depends on the size of your feet. I had to pivot my foot on the ball and blip the throttle with my heel on my E46, because my feet wouldn't touch the accelerator pedal doing it the other way. Now with the FR-S, I can do both depending on the width of the shoes I wear. I plan to extend the accelerator pedal surface so I can do this easily.
