I prefer "fitted" - not super snug or painted on but a bit firm. Only down side is I conceal carry in my waistband so they can't be too snug and all jeans have to be bought with an extra in on the waist.

Ex-cross country racer here. Got decently-sized legs. Dear god they're comfy.

They're made from a weird stretchy denimy stuff that is so much nicer than my denim slim-fit jeans which are IMPOSSIBLE to get my wallet/phone in/out of the front pockets in, and it's odd and strangely fun to have something hugging my calves
