So while driving along with Mrs. Ontop this weekend we heard a report on NPR about the way Porsche is trying to extend its demographic by making products that appeal to more women drivers. The car in question was the new Macan... while this was on I pointed out a Panamera and Cayenne to her (we were in La Jolla over the weekend, lot of expensive metal over there) anyway... she turns to me and then says that it's a mistake for them to do that. they are trying to appeal to soccer moms by building a daily driven, grocery getter and that simply isn't the image one should have when they think of Porsche. It isn't what a car like that is supposed to be about (I nearly cried and remembered why I married her in the first place.) Her suggestion was that they call it anything else, just not a Porsche....ARE YOU LISTENING, VW?

Is it just me or does that look like a lifted Panamera?

it certainly has a confusing look to it.... it looks rather donk on those wheels.

I don't think Porsche would care what your wife thinks, the Cayenne was one of their most successful cars ever. And it's been around for over a decade now without their brand being tarnished too much.

My wife is in the demographic they are targeting, so I think they would care more than you think. At this point they have something like 85% male drivers, so they are looking to change that. I'm not certain this is it.

no, because your wife is just one woman in that incredibly large demographic. People have decried the dilution of Porsche creating 'cars for women' since the Boxster.

and they keep selling.

and selling.

and Porsche are still here and everyone still respects them as much as they ever did.

additionally, I haven't seen a single quote from Porsche saying they're targeting any demographic with the Macan. They've seemingly gone out of their way to stay mum on it so they don't potentially alienate other demographics.

You aren't really understanding representative thought in this process. No they don't care what my wife, as an individual thinks, however by being a woman of a certain age and income bracket, she does represent who they are trying to reach. So in that respect, yes, they do care what she thinks. As for what you have and haven't seen, I'm sure the report is on NPR. Feel free to go search for it.

I am understanding where you are coming from, but I was talking about Mrs Ontop as an individual.. and as her beliefs are at odds with their own market testing I think they would class those views as an outlier.

nothing on NPR yet either, though I probably found the story on businessweek ? I'll give it a read when I'm not at work.
