one of my sales guys took his old Volvo on a client meetup in northern MA, and it died in the clients parking lot. Checked he was getting fuel, and he checked the MAF sensor wiring (plug and unplug, have had this issue before), turbo piping, and vacuum lines. I am pretty sure those are coil on plug so no dizzy to be burned out. What should he test? It is firing off for a second then dying. Sounds like vacuum to me. I don't want to drive 2h to rescue him. Any suggestions? 99 V70 GLT automatic with 225K miles. Due to get his timing belt replaced this thursday (why I told him not to drive it, overdue)

You are right, but electronic bits talking to coils may be bad. Are there any codes?

If it were a Briggs & Stratton I'd say bad flywheel key. If it were an early 90s Volvo, I'd posit partial secondary fuel pump failure. It being neither of those, keine Ahnung .

Last code I read out of it that never got cleared was for misfire cyl #3 but that was months ago. I will have him pull a plug and see if that could be it. I would imagine if his T belt snapped he would get no startup and some evil sounds

yeah it cranks and starts for a half a second, then dies. He said slowly dies though

fuck that is a tough one. i'd just have to be there to hear it and look at it.
ALL hoses and charge tubes (wiggle test)
Air and timing sensors (wiggle test)
aww man too many little things to check

I'm with Rover on this one. Sounds like a fuel pump issue.

How did he check for fuel, depressing the Schrader on the rail? That can be misleading. It could be several things, but thump the fuel tank while cranking first, if he hasn't already. The fuel pump relays are a pretty common problem too, it's a green one in the underhood panel. You can take it apart & tweak the contacts to make it work temporarily. The immobilizer will do this too, if he has another key he should try it.
The cam sensor at the back of the head will cause a similar symptom as well, but not much to be done there without a new one on hand, unless this is happening with the engine hot, in which case it may start after it cools down. The same thing will happen with your E320's crank sensor, BTW ;)

ha I forgot they were still running the green box on those for fp relay. I have adjusted numerous, or hard wired them to make it home in a pinch.
Good to know on cam sensor! I have a good one in hand if I have to go down and check it out. He is having the client (a ford dealer) run codes now

Oops, sorry, it's red on top, green on bottom. I just grabbed the tester out of my toolbox & double checked. Big "103" on top.

If it comes to rescue, let me know. Where is "northern MA"? (my username here plus the big Y!'s domain name will get you an email straight to me)
fires for a second then dies? Sure about fuel? That sounds a lot like a fuel pump.

it sure does to me too. He is in Salisbury right now. I'll let you know, but I think I remember you being in boston area. With traffic it might just be quicker for me to drive down from portland. Ill let you know! Thanks!
