This would be a terrible idea for a new daily driver wouldn't it?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I can certainly rationalize it though,

4 doors, makes sense since we want kids soon.

Hitch, I do have an ATV to tow around.

4WD, it snows here, a lot.

The design was ancient by 1995 all the problems should be pretty much sorted.

It would look amazing with a roof rack and a proper front brush guard.

if you can handle the gas mileage, sure it is. And the hatch rust, and the other rust that will happen. And the air suspension that needs to be on real springs. 95 was the year with the updated dash, so is desirable.

You should probably go buy it.

That's where you'd be wrong. Land Rover has three departments working full-time on how to come up with new and interesting problems for both new and used Land Rovers.

Entirely true. This model, for example, has a new and interesting radiator hose problem that causes engine overheating - a detail lost on previous models. It also features a prototype of the transmission used in the later "P38" Range Rover, so it doesn't match anything going backwards or forwards.

Lol, 'Merica.

Pre-baby: "So what it only has two doors? We can cram like 3 more adults back there!"

Baby: "Geez, we're gonna need a whole extra set of doors for this eight-pound jellybean and its millions of accessories!"

I've got springs for a '95 just sitting around. I'd probably sell them to him for like $50.

I tore down a 95 RRC County not too long ago. I've got the springs and a bunch of other parts that I won't be using, as I tore it down for the engine. Spare auto trans, even, and a coil spring set. The trans is stuck in first, though.

This one... let's just say it wasn't rust free. Holes big enough to fit your head through.

The grill "upgrade" a year prior to this even induced some overheating problems, due to radiator changes. How do you fuck up even a facelift? Ask Land Rover.

Go buy this instead:

1986 Volvo 240 - $899 (madison.craigslist.org)

4 doors.

capable of towing an ATV.

able to conquer Swedish snow.

ancient bulletproof design.

would be awesome with a roof rack and a front brush guard.

This one was out of White Plains NY and had spent part of its life taking its owner to snowboarding locations. The steel body pan was beyond fucked, but it only quit driving when the trans decided it really really liked first. I think it got to like 140k miles, but it's weird, the cam doesn't look worn to a nub like I'd been trained to expect on these.

I went after this 40K mile 5 speed RR last year. "Best offer" it said. Rusty in the body pan, guy still wants 4 grand for it. It looked real good in the pics. And by "driving mint" it meant someone stuffed a Holly on it which was out of tune. Tires cracked. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid…

The engine donor was so rusted that I pretty much pushed the air box through the fender from the inside. Comparable levels of rust to the Ranchero, but swap engine compartment for roof. Front fender liners were just *gone*.

just because I am curious, what is your take on the P38 RR? I keep seeing them around already converted to spring for dead cheap. Seem like somewhat less issues than the Classic. I dont like the look as much, but as a functional truck, what say you?

I haven't been exposed to their design that much. I think they're reasonably solid for what they are, though a bit overcomplicated. They've got the GEMs injection, which isn't too bad, but I'm not sure how it compares overall to the Lucas. The one thing I really do know about them is that the engines in them are tuned to run lean and hot for emissions reasons, and it kills a lot of them. I think it's possible to sabotage appropriately, but factory they're no so bueno.

interesting take. GEMs wasnt too bad. I assume the 4.0's pop head gaskets right around 106K miles then....

Kinja'd!!!1

Exactly when it happens, I don't know - but Des Hammill's book on RV8 builds says IIRC they're set to run hot in the P38, and the best performance on them comes a bit lean, but running ~170 degrees. AKA, the stock settings kind of suck. I have heard in general that there are two kinds of 4.0/4.6s in the earlier models with them: those that have popped a head gasket, and those that are going to. Even with a swap to composite gasket and correcting an issue with the head bolts, running them seriously hot is just fucking stupid, and you risk a dropped liner and needing a block boiling with tophat liners and sealant. $$$

Ditto this. I got rid of my 1991 BMW 318is for a W124 Benz four door for the same reason - my old, broken back didn't like the installing and removal of the kiddo from the back seat.

If it's just a normal drop, and not a "jumped into the crank" drop. The later style of block ("A36") used for the later 3.9, later 4.2, 4.0, and 4.6 has a bigger shelf that typically prevents total catastrophe. Fixes range from from bore out and tophat liner to tophat liner plus silicone at bottom, to tophat liner plus boiling out the block and treating with sealant. Plenty of blocks out there now with a fixed water jacket crack running like a top - it's all about how it's done. The only real death knell is if it's a low-graded block (blocks after a certain year have color code grades) with ovalled cylinders.
