Subaru or not to Subaru, that is the question

Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 10

My wife and I just had our first child, and we're looking to get a larger vehicle to replace her 07 Elantra. Yesterday we went and test-drove the 2015 Outback and the 2015 Mazda CX-5. My wife and I both fell in love with the Outback. I (being cheap) was hoping to go for the 2014 model, since there were still a few on the lot, but my wife really liked the touch-screen infotainment console on the 2015s. She has a long commute, so the increase in EPA-estimated mileage from 30 to 33 highway would make a difference over time as well.

My questions to anyone interested:

1) Does anyone have any experience in the 2015 Outback? Any insights, experiences, etc. that would sway our purchase?

2) Any options that you would definitely consider? We're looking at the Premium level with nothing else added on.

Thanks!

Well, my cousin has a 2010 Outback that I told him to purchase 4 years ago and he *loves* it. Said he wants to keep it for his daughter (9) and give it to her as her first car.

I've driven it once, it's pretty nice. You can't go wrong with the Outback. The problem with the CX-5 is that it is quite underpowered but otherwise it's a nice crossover.

Also, (bias since my family has one), what do you think of the Forester?

Congrats on the kid! Anyways, the Outback is a solid choice. I've got an '05 and my friend has a '10. We both adore our OB's. I'm extremely biased towards them so I'll never not suggest an Outback haha

No experience in a 2015 Outback, but I have a 2014 Forester 2.5i that has essentially the same drivetrain, so I'll try to help a bit...

The 2.5 engine is surprisingly quick on the road, passing isn't really an issue. The CVT is pretty decent as well, great for mileage.

It has been very reliable since we got it, we've put on 15k miles since we bought it last december. The only issue we've really had is when the mirror got messed up by the service guy who ran into it, lol.

Best part of the car is the ground clearance/awd system though. I'm pretty sure the new Outback comes with X-mode, and even without it you can get pretty far. I've taken the Fozzy places I wouldn't take our F250.

I'd say go for it over the CX-5.

The EyeSight cameras interest me - they're optional equipment on the 2015 2.5i Premium, per Subaru's site, but I think that they're not available until later this year. I guess it doesn't matter if you're not springing for any options, though.

The leftover 2014 Outbacks probably do have EyeSight, though.

How about the XV Crosstrek? I've driven one before and it was pretty good.

Since my wife is the main driver, she preferred the slightly more car-like handling of the Outback, and the fact that it didn't ride quite as high. Both were much nicer than the CX-5 in our experience.

We didn't have a chance to test the Crosstrek yesterday (baby at home that we had to get back to). We had kind of assumed (maybe incorrectly) that it was significantly smaller inside.

Thanks! We were really impressed with it overall. You're right about the X-mode.

Yes, you're right. The salesmen said that the EyeSight models aren't going to be on the lot for a few months. But it seems like the 2015s are selling almost as soon as they hit the pavement - we had to drive a service loaner because all that they had had been sold.

Outback, call it a day.
