Rather than pouring it down the drain and clogging up the 200 year old Victorian sewer system, London chip shops are now refining their waste oil and selling it to Taxi drivers.
Turns out this is quite common in the UK as British chips consumption levels are 17x higher than that of our annual electrical output ... probably. Anyway I've heard of coconut oil in South-East Asia and sugar pulp in Scandinavia so I'm curious to hear what other alternative fuels are used elsewhere in everyday life.

In Canada next to nothing. We put up to 10% ethanol in our gasoline(petrol) and that's about it.
We can buy all these cars that are flexfuel which can run E85 ethanol but I have yet to see 1 single pump that sells E85 so it kinda defeats the purpose don't you think?
it's a shame really because there has to be a better way of doing things. But that would eat into big oils profits and that's why we can't have nice things.

In America, we love burning food as fuel - not food waste, but actual, useful food. We blend 10-15% ethanol into gasoline as an additional gift to Cargill and ADM, since they're not making quite enough off of high fructose corn syrup as-is.

www.greasecar.com The company is based in Holyoke, Massachusetts. I have a kit that was installed in my 2001 Jetta TDi when I bought it in 2009. I don't use vegetable oil too often because I don't have the time to process it and collect it but I have in the past. The irony is that I know exactly where they are located (because I was born in Holyoke but haven't lived there since I moved to Nevada in 1994).

They use sugar cane to produce ethanol in Brazil and unlike other countries they can make an economic case for this. Mind you they need to cut down a lot of rain forests for this.
