I won't be able to drive my car for quite some time as I can't have a car on campus (no reason to have it). Which sucks. Also, I have no clue what to pack. This concludes Bandit's rambling.

How close to campus do you live? If you're relatively close ( < 2hrs), I would bring basic stuff with you (clothes, computer/laptop, TV, stereo, etc.) now, go home for Labor Day weekend, and bring the rest of your stuff up that weekend.

Have your parents at least run the car once a week to full operating temp. If they'll be going away, add fuel stabilizer to it.

Don't let your hard work become really hard work when you want to come back and enjoy it.

I always commuted to college because my parents' rule was "car or dorm," and I couldn't give up my car.

I found out that I got into Uni/College yesterday - results day in the UK - and there's no provision for on-campus parking where I'll be going, either. I'd like to keep my car, as otherwise I'll have to quit my job - the Uni I'm going to is roughly the same distance from where I work as my house - so I'm trying to figure out if there's a workaround. Term starts at the end of September, so I've still got some time.

Yeah, I plan on filling the tank all the way up, throwing a car cover on it, putting it on jack stands, and having my dad start it up every other week or so.

I had to leave my car at home when I lived in a dorm too. Because it was about a 4 day drive between them (Canada is kinda big). Honestly, dorm life is what is, you won't miss your car that much as you won't have to travel that much.

I had a great time in the dorms, but never again man, never again.

First pack a box of tissues to cry into when my Spartans CRUSH you in football on October 11th.

Yeah, College Football shit talk has begun lol.

(I graduated in o8 from MSU)

Second, bring another box of tissues for basketball season.

Third, A good attitude, and the mindset of meeting new people. You're paying for the full college experience and getting a dorm when you're 5 miles away, so take advantage of it. Meet new people, I'm sure being that close you know a bunch of people going to Purdon't (as I like to call it!). I saw so many people at MSU that only hung out with their high school friends. I didn't have that luxury as I'm originally from NJ and was the only one from my high school to go to MSU that year (2 others applied, only 1 other was accepted...interestingly enough he went to Purdue instead lol).

Fourth, don't do what I did my freshman year - which was drink, party, play video games, and never go to class. It's a bitch to get that GPA back up, much easier to KEEP it up. I'm not saying don't have fun. HAVE FUN - just control yourself. Best years of my life were college.

Fifth, If you want to have a cool dorm room, fun lights are the right place to start. String lights, rope lights, black lights, etc. It's allowed to be tacky, it's college lol

There's my pile of advice.

And despite making fun of every other BigTen school, it's impressive that every single school in the conference has great academics. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunities.

Need a beater then! I left my Jeep at home my freshman year and drove a Ford Escape instead. Having a car was the best.. very helpful getting booze and other items that college students dabble in :)

Best of luck with the college/university life! My advice is find some good people that will make your time not hell. And maybe join a club. Hell, our school has a club that apparently built a tiny racecar. See if you can join one of those.

Regarding 1 and 2: we're the worst team in the big ten, have fun steam rolling us. I've lived in town for over a decade and my dad use to work in the athletic department (luckily he left before they got horrible) and have seen the decline of awesome Purdue exhibits. Our swim team is awesome...

I'll try to have fun, just got to make it through those weed out classes first.
