I would say the advantages really come down to style preference and DD-ability. The Beetle and the GTI pretty much run even in the pricing department, but the Beetle obviously has a much different character. It's not quite as hard-nosed as the GTI, and in my opinion its a lot more fun looking.

It also has a more daily friendly ride. The ride is more akin to the GLI than the GTI. That is to say still sporty, but a bit more forgiving.
