It was only in 1960 that anyone managed to cross the Darien Gap by car - in a Land Rover dubbed The Affectionate Cockroach and a Jeep. It took nearly five months, averaging just 200m per hour.
The BBC offers an interesting look at the Darien Gap, the final untamed section of the Pan-American Highway.

That makes me want to sell some things, buy an 80's Range Rover, get my dog and some supplies, travel to the most inhospitable places on earth and be truly happy.
