I have personal experience with the 4runner, the Pathfinder, The XJ and the Montero. Loved that simple, well built look. Accordion boots too. sigh.

This one is my favorite. Is this the Montero?

EDIT: I read the whole post now. Ignore my question.

Jeep: Screw airbags, our wheel will just scare you're face away from a collision.

missed one. Scout II plaid http://hooniverse.com/wp-content/upl…

and maybe the 89-91 Grand Wagoneer with the compass up top

but agree with this list! I wish I could find a nice Trooper 2

Montero and trooper use the same instrument cluster BOX. (not the gauges.)

Oh man that Trooper brings back memories. My first vehicle was a '91 XS that my parents handed down to me.

Just looking at this picture I can feel the surfaces and smell it.

If you look close there are two buttons just below the gearshift.

Power would make the transmission hold the gears a little longer

Winter would start you off from a stop in 2nd in order to slip the wheels less

I have those 2 buttons in my cruiser. here is what they are used for:

pwr - to make the transmission actually shift gears instead of stubbornly holding onto them like a youtube commentor holds onto to their opinion that "_____ suxs"

winter (2nd in my case) - for when you want to force a 2nd gear start in low range for water crossings or higher speed low range operation.

They were even cooler when the dash boards were made of metal. Think I like the jeep the best, certainly has the best wheel.

I meant the size of the grey part on top. It's humongous!

My XJ had that interior (with the manual) and I LOVED it.

Airbags used to be pretty compact, didn't they?

yeah, they fit right where the horn went and worked just like a horn too, but didn't inflate or function as an airbag.

I loved my XJ, I hated my XJ. It eventually rusted into a withered heap. The 2.8 V6 in that thing deserved a worse fate than that. Ugh.

Same engine as the trooper in this test, btw. Any XJ without the 4.0 is a wasted XJ, sadly.

I'm partial to the 2nd gen Liberty (Disclosure: Own one).

There are two big dials (Tach / Speedo), two little dials (Temp / Fuel), and that's it.

Takes a 2-DIN stereo for easy replacement, and has 3-dial HVAC (temp / fan speed / direction).

Plus it has an Oh Shit Handle front & center for the passenger.

Another great one is the '80s Toyota pickup/4runner. My favorite of the above is the Nissan, but I still have the Nissan Hardbody that was my first truck. Great post!

I prefere the 80's toyota interior too (my 97 cruiser looks a lot like this 91 4runner)

Also those interiors could actually take the abuse they were meant to take...

Yes my 02 Tacoma has the similar shape and flow. I like the 80's Toyotas

I can tell you from personal experience that at nearly 250,000 miles and many true suv experiences that my 97's interior is holding up better than it has any right to. But I do pine for something closer to the mitsu/izuzu interiors. So hot.

I have a rattle on the roof load bars (coming off soon) and a loose screw in the map light...and thats it.
