An overwhelming majority All car accidents I've ever been involved in, happened because someone couldn't be bothered to turn their head around and backed right into me. Seriously. There have been four, three in cars owned by myself, and I wasn't even in the car for two of them. Also, none of them involved my beater '94 Pontiac Grand Prix that already had more dents in it than a speed limit sign in rural Idaho that the local youth use for target practice.
Two of the culprits were teenagers, the other two were really stupid adults. One was a middle-aged women who claimed that she couldn't see my T-Bird in the backing camera of her Tribeca. The latest escapade was at the hands of the trashiest family in my apartment complex. The people who always smoke in their apartment despite a strict no-smoking policy, think that no one notices the smell that permeates the entire floor, and then argue with the property manager when confronted about it. Every building/complex/neighborhood has that neighbor. And they are the ones who backed into my Hyundai.
My wife was pulling into our parking lot, I was in the passenger seat. They start backing up right as we get behind them. We're only about three feet away, there's no chance of avoiding it on our end, so my wife leans on the horn as a final defence, to no avail. The guy gets out and, after apologizing, states that he does have insurance, like it's some sort of miracle. In his case, it probably is. You can easily see the damage on my car, but I honestly could not tell exactly where his vehicle made contact. I think his entire rear bumper was constructed of tape and Bondo.
Here is where it gets fun, though. Their car disappeared the next day. I started to get paranoid, thinking that these people may just be stupid enough to skip town over a small fender bender. I know it's crazy, but these people are pretty special. After about four days of no car, Mrs. Alfalfa informs me that she spoke to the driver earlier that day. They were in another accident, and their car was totaled. Which for their car, may just mean that they lost a wheel. I wonder what their insurance rate is...

Your story highlights why I don't like the word accident . Yes, sometimes it really is an accident, but more often than not it's a crash because somebody was being stupid.

Ugh when I was 16 someone backed into my dads car from a driveway.
She was old and senile and kept asking me where the spa was.
I DONT CARE WHERE THE SPA IS...YOU CRASHED INTO MY CAR"
It was made even better when she hit the gas instead of the brake after impact. Moron.

If ever there was a post that cried out for that gif of a car delicately coming to a stop, pausing, and then ramming full force in reverse, this was it.

"she couldn't see my T-Bird in the backing camera of her Tribeca."
This is why I hate all this tech stuff in cars. It makes lots of people solely depend on them and not use the skills they were supposed to learn to get a license in the first place.
The camera is there to help you, but it shouldn't be the only thing you use to look. You have a neck, head and eyes: USE THEM!

I almost called it a crash, but that also felt odd considering that he was moving about 5 mph.

I was on the fence about backing cameras before, but since that incident I've been pretty adamantly against them unless you're driving something like a bus or box truck. I wanted to smack her after she said that.

Unfortunately, get used to it. They'll soon be in every new vehicle on the road.
As you said, makes sense in some vehicles. But by putting them in you're mandating out common sense. I'm sure thru probably do cut down on some accidents, but it shouldn't be used instead of basic driver instincts.

Boo.
I hate that shit. My wife's car is a freaking target for being hit in lots. 5 times in the last 3 years, never once has anyone stuck around or left a note. One of the times they hit hard enough that the upper suspension collapsed and gave the driver's left rear wheel some wicked camber.
Me on the other hand, I just get rear ended. 3 times in last five years...once at highway speeds, twice just sitting minding my business in a line of cars at a light.
I'm not sure which one I hate more...but at least in the rear endings the claims go on their insurance rather than mine.

Ironically enough, both accidents I've ever been in involved me backing out of a parking space into someone:
Put car into reverse. Check over right shoulder- clear. Check over left shoulder- clear. Look over right shoulder and begin backing.
BAM!
What the fuck!?
Where the hell did this guy come from!?
The first time? They'd claimed to have accelerated to try and get past me before I backed the rest of the way out. They also claimed they honked. They didn't. My windows were down and I had no radio playing, so I would've heard them. I couldn't see them when checking over my left shoulder because they'd been behind a massive SUV three spots to my left. Found out 3 months later they were being investigated for insurance fraud for a near-identical incident which was caught on camera.
The second time, while driving my dad's giant 1993 F-150, the other car had swung into the bank parking lot after I'd checked to my left and had been rushing to try and get into the empty spot on my left. Since I'd had the wheel turned to back out and to the right, the front of the truck caught and scraped their rear fender. The worst part? Their car was a 1965 Corvette Stingray in cherry red.

I know, I try not to think about it.
If you try to make something idiot proof, they're just going to make a better idiot.

The problem is, you make it sound like she would be any better without that tech. Newsflash: She wouldn't. You would probably be lucky if she turned her head at all.

That's bullshit though. It's literally impossible not to see the car you back into in a rear view camera. She probably just wasn't paying attention to it.
