Has anyone used this service?
I'm going on vacation to San Francisco in October, and will need to rent a car. We are going fly into SF then drive up to Calistoga for a couple of nights then drive back to SF and stay there for a couple of nights. I have never used a service like this, but the idea of renting something fun for the 3 days I need a car is very appealing to me. But the idea of renting someones personal care worries me, insurance is one thing, but also them backing out last minute.
Also if anyone has any recommendations for what to do during my short stay I'm all ears.

I have, twice. I rented both a Porsche Cayman and a 2013 GT500. I could not have asked for a better rental experience. My only suggestion would be to rent from people who have existing feedback.

Good to know. I saw a BRZ the other day but it looks like its gone now. I may just go for a mini or there are a couple of GTI's. I like fun, but I'm also cheap.

Also, how does the process work, do I meet the actual owner or a third party?

You meet the owner, usually they list places for pick up (airports, etc...) but when you send the rental request and the required message, you could always propose a different pick up location.

I am tempted to try it. There are a fair amount of listings in the DC Area, so my possibilities are endless. I probably should have jumped on it this week, as my car is currently in the body shop...three days overdue.
