After being inspired by the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I bought a Peugeot 205 GTi! I just brought it home. It's a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6. Although it needs a bit of work the car is solid and incredibly fun to drive.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My 406 coupe, parked next to it, is easily the superior highway cruiser. The 205 GTi is the king of back roads though, I was smiling the whole time I wasn't driving on a boring straight highway. The lack of power steering is refreshing, the lack of cruise control, AC and even automatic wipers and power mirrors needed some adjustment. It does have power windows, but the switch for the driver side window is broken. The power locks work flawlessly, so at least there's that. The engine is a gem. Interestingly the 205 feels much faster than the 406, even though they perform rather similarly.

I'll post updates when there's a significant development.

edit:

The driver side window doesn't function. Not because of the window switch, like the seller said. I checked. Probably something with the motor. I will need to replace that ugly plastic housing as well.

One can only assume a 806 turbo is what comes next.

Ugh. I certainly don't expect my girlfriend to give birth to triplets any time soon.

Congrats! Do you plan on keeping it or is it bound for the US?

I do plan on keeping it for a while. Half a year? First I have to fix all the minor things wrong with it. The downside to the area I live in is that it's totally flat and there aren't really that many interesting roads to drive on. I have to get out of my way to do so.

This 205 is already a full year older than the BMW that's in Texas as we speak. My GTI is from 1988, the 205 GTI was introduced in 1984. It's plausible I'm shipping it to the US eventually, it depends on the demand there.

You're right, your 406 coupe does look quite nice!

The 205 is doing bad, bad things to me, though.

They're the factory alloys for the 1.6 version of the GTI though.

Why not take it on a trip to see your GF. Lot's of mountain roads around here. And the best way to find out what state a used car really is in is to take it on a road trip. Are you a member in any equivalent of the ADAC so that if something breaks on the road, they will tow it home for free?

I had one as a company car in London 1990 to 92. During those two/three years I had the spare wheel stolen three times - the rack it sits in under the rear of the car is very easy to prise open it seems! After the first time I kept the spare inside the car but the other two times happened after long trips into the countryside and I, being tired, forgot to put it back inside the car. Suggests someone checked the car on a very regular basis.

Other than that, an absolutely brilliant car. Mine was a very dark metallic green that looked black until the light hit it at certain angles and then you saw the greenness. Amazingly the upholstery was also green, practically unheard of as they nearly all had the same red that I have no doubt is in the one you've just bought.

I'd love to do so, the downside is that I'm spoiled by the 406. It is a 850 km one way trip of solely highways, which is simply far nicer in a large coupe with cruise control, AC, perfect Recaro seats that don't tire you at all (205 gti seats are decent), no vibration in the steering wheel and the far cheaper autogas/LPG fuel. Fuel alone would cost me €100 extra with the 205 for the round trip, compared to the 406.

Having said that, the vibration should be mostly gone after fitting new drive shafts and I've got an address in Sauerland (2x300 km versus 2x850) that I visit from time to time as well. They've got roads that are banned for motorcycles as they became so popular they'd kill themselves too often. They should be fun.

I've driven the 205 for 300 km yesterday.
