How exactly does this new comment system work?

Will this only effect the FP or will it trickle down to Oppo as well? How will I know if I'm a gray? How does one get un-grayed? So many questions!

Maybe in order to understand Gawker, we have to look at the word itself. Basically, it's made up of two separate words — "Ga" and "wker." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is Gawker.

You are an author, you should already be ungrayed. On Oppo, I mean. If Jalopnik follows you, you will be ungrayed there too.

If it is like the old system, until you are recognized as a reliably positive addition to conversations, your comments will be greyed out until the author of that post, an approved commenter, or staff member "stars" your post. I'm curious whether those of us with prior status will be grandfathered in. I actually like that system because (at least at Jalopnik) the staff took it seriously and were good about approving commenters that deserved approval. Sites like Kotaku and Gizmodo were almost impossible to get to approve you as a commenter, even if your posts were Pulitzer material.

It says commenters that are "followed" by staff will be good to go, that may be the "approval" system this time around.

You need to be followed by whoever you are leaving the comment for to be out of the grey. ie: FP comments you need to be followed by Jalopnik.

Well, we believe anonymity is important to people who would be compromised by revealing information tied to their identity. But it does make building commenting systems more intricate!

For every one person who is protected by this rule there are probably thousands who hide behind it to drag society down with hate and ignorance. You aren't being a "funny troll", you are being A) a blight on society and B) an asshole.

I'm thinking it's "Ga", "wa" and "keru". "Ga" in a lost ancient dialect meaning testicles, "wa" in the sense of feeling or balance, and the Japanese word "keru" meaning "to kick". In short, "Gawker" means "Ow my balls".

Where do you see who follows you? I can see who I follow, but not who follows me (I think nobody, but I was able to post on Oppo before it became open to all (I think anyway, I'm so confused).

I did manage a star on Gizmodo at one point. Strangely enough they de-starred me about a week before Kinja 1.0 was implemented because I criticized something they wrote.

Yeah, I think Gawker needs to reexamine their priorities. I think that the Gawker site (not the company) is driving this, because they want people to be able to make anonymous tips, hoping that the next Deep Throat calls Gawker first. I wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe they can figure out some sort of anonymous tip line or something. Because the neighborhood really started going downhill when they instituted burners.
