This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I realize that it's Gawker, and that people are lazy, but really, how lazy do you have to be to not check around your vehicle before you set off? Some commenters are even calling out those who claim they do check, saying that there is no way they check every time (or most times).
Checking around (and under) your vehicle will not completely eliminate the risk of something going wrong, but it can greatly reduce that risk. I always do a walk around and check under my vehicle before setting off. It's also a great time to look for leaking fluids, flat tires, and potential damage from accidents while you were away from your vehicle.
Does anyone else check before they set off, or is it just me?

Every single time? Or often? Because I think I am just about as aware as it gets when it comes to my cars, but I can't say that I check underneath every single time before I get moving.

I check visual stuff like tyres or damage when I walk around to unfold my passenger mirror. When I've turned round at the bottom of my street and come back past my space I glance over for spots of fluid. Simple stuff.

I don't check under my car, but I do walk the long way around it before I get in. I mostly look for door dings and shitty parking marks.

I dunno, Gawker commentators. Seems like it would be nice if cars had rear visibility that wasn't just active in the driveway, but on the road as well. We could call this mystical device a "rear window". It could even be improved on the hatchbacks that are now seemingly more common than sedans, and best of all, it would put that currently worthless rearview mirror in the middle to work on the road!

I check my car itself for issue (and thus the elements of it's surrounding) every so often, but I'd be lying if I said I do a complete walk around check of the car and the environment whenever I drive. Usually I just get in the car and drive off, and if there was a baby sleeping under the front bumper, he would end up squished.

Trans Am? I check under the car every time to check the status of any leaks and am required to open the garage door and walk around the car fully to get to my door. My shitty truck? I walk around it to get in but I dont look under it or anything. Also, who decides it's a smart idea to sunbathe on the driveway? You have a yard! The younger sister is partially at fault here too. The situation isn't totally black and white.

Haha. I can see my underside and all four tires without walking around! Score one for the lift!

I mean I use my mirrors but I don't expect anyone to be sunbathing in my freaking driveway. Thats like saying you decided the street was a good place to take a midnight nap and then wondering why you get run over.

I don't actively check, but there's no reason that anything would be behind my car, and I can see behind it when I walk out to the driveway. I would notice. I have three kids, though, and my wife and I never back out unless we can see all three of them if they are in the yard. There have been too many stories about young kids getting run over when they run out to the car as it's pulling out.

I walk around every time, and try to remember to check under most times. I always check underneath the first time the car has been started in the day, and anytime I leave my driveway. If an area I'm in lends itself to something possibly ending up under the car, or I notice something around the car that would tip me off, then I also remember to check.

In the driveway or parking lots I always check by virtue of the path I take to the car. From the garage, I suppose there's probably a foot or so of blind spot that is obscured past the garage door and hidden by the rear hatch. I check behind the car when loading, but the door is down at the time. There is not a substantial risk that someone would be in that spot. If I had small children or a 15 year old that liked to sunbathe there I would open the door then stick my head out to check.
Usually when these things happen a camera would not have prevented it. They just throw it in reverse and move not really doing a head check or checking the mirrors until they're about to the intersection with the road. I've seen it many times. Those folks would not check the rear view camera.
I've also been in the car with coworkers who reverse solely using rear view cameras who have less awareness of their surroundings. They throw it in reverse and laser focus at the camera and are unaware of cross traffic. We've had a number of close calls in the parking garage because they don't see other cars coming and stick their butt out into the lane.

I look around it probably 99% of the time. Check for toys, objects (tree branches) flat tires... Things that will flatten my tires. It takes 2 seconds and the headaches it has saved make it easy to justify it as a process.

In the mornings I tend to, because we have kittens in the yard, but I don't check every single time I drive it. I do walk around my car often while smoking a cigarette or just hanging out or whatever.

I honestly never look under my car. I will however stop and look in all directions around me before I put it into reverse and let the clutch out.

I don't look under without some reason, but I always look around the car when there's any chance there are kids about.
I once drove over a barbecue in my blind spot - in a rental car, so it was funny. If that had been a kid instead, wouldn't have been nearly as funny.

I check behind and under, but only because I know there are stray cats around. I don't check for fluids as 1) I wouldn't have a clue as to where it came from and 2) I wouldn't know how to fix it.
Luckily, since I can only drive with my parents, they get outside and watch for me. However I've reached the point where I can use the mirrors and stick my head out and park well without them telling me how much space I have. And I get more practice because I don't move unless I can clearly see them standing away from the car.

Man your better than me. I park my drivers side away from my house door so at least I have to walk around ONE end of the car to get to it.
