It was getting a ton of traffic from outside Kinja. That's how I found it. According to Chartbeat there were more than 700 people looking at it when it was deleted with about half coming from Google. RennSport was certainly on top of the story and there were at least some comments coming second-hand from the scene. Sad story, but I thought it was a good Kinja post.

Maybe so, but the authors literally don't have the capability to do it. The only way someone Deadspin (or any other blog) could get something on a blog like Rennsport or Oppo deleted is by calling up Ernie or one of the other tech guys and having him straight up dive into the code of the site to pull the piece. There is no physical way for one of those authors to remove an item without full tech support. And, since the removal wouldn't go unnoticed, it's not something they could get away with without shenanigans being called.

TL;DR: Whatever shady dealings staff authors might partake in, deleting posts from the blogs isn't one of them.

More places for speculation and active trolls to throw anything at the net. "reports say" is being used to take unconfirmed speculation (deadspin) and turning it into "news". Think about it folks, you just came up with a half-dozen theories as to why the thread went away.
