Some cars have mixed SAE and metric on different sections. Some might even have SAE and metric on different parts of the engine. The Rover is not so plebian: water pump installed with SAE 5/16" AND M6 both...

In fairness, there is a reason, in that the SAE 5/16" are thru-timing cover as well, and the tooling for the timing cover bolts probably didn't change when the timing cover did. New timing cover, which meant new holes in it ->metric holes. This is of course a very shabby excuse.

Haha, that's worse than the early Opalas, which had metric bodies and SAE engines, with both types on the engine mounts.

Engine mounts on a Range Rover Classic: engine side SAE, car side metric just like that. It's just that the insanity goes much further. Metric transmission bolted with SAE bolts to a mostly-SAE engine with mostly metric accessories and some absolutely schizophrenic bits like the water pump. The water pump is just extra stupid because they changed the outer set of bolts from SAE 1/4" for the giggles - without changing the through bolts. This is even with other changes to the engine block adding some metric tapped holes.

My buddy laughs at me because he doesn't understand why I have so many metric as well as imperial wrenches. If only he knew...The worse is when the bolt/nut is worn and you can't actually which it is!

Well, the head was 7/16 on the inch, which is within 5 thou of 11mm. Maybe they thought it was okay. It's NOT okay, Rover. It's *really* not okay.

I used almost no metric bolts on the Series. The key is *almost*. There were a couple trim panels I put on with metric, IIRC. Of course, the set screw in the Fairey hubs is metric too, but that barely counts. It's the current perversity record holder, though, because Whitworth + SAE + metric, with most of the latter two being actually my fault.

Yeah Fairey isn't on my favorite list right now, the Fairey overdrive on the 88' shit the bed recently and scared the ever loving shit out of me on the road. We've finally had enough of it and ordered an Ashcroft R380 stumpy box, maybe we'll sell the box as is or maybe rebuild it first. Haven't decided yet.

Although in all seriousness we are going to try make it look less like an R380 and more like the Series box, I should take a picture of the switches that were put in for the air lockers. My dad did a pretty neat job of it.
