Bugatti Successor Planned to be Really Freaking Fast

....Makes this authour sort of wonder what the "point" of a million dollar 286 mph car is. Yes, I understand that most cars are capable of going far faster than we would need to them to go, and I have no problem with that, but it appears as though the Bugatti's theoretical 286 MPH top speed can't even reasonably be achieved on a track which kind of defeats the purpose. If you had an endless straight downhill I bet my own car could get going pretty quick...theoretically.

(Gratuitous Veyron). .

As per autocar:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-c…

"The Veyron replacement is set to adopt a heavily updated version of its predecessor's turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 engine. It will incorporate hybrid technology and produce in the region of 1500ps (1479bhp), officials involved in the new car's development have revealed."

"The new Bugatti is currently undergoing initial conceptual engineering tests in a programme aimed at unveiling the car in 2016 prior to a planned start to customer deliveries the following year."

"Among the performance benchmarks being targeted by Bugatti with its new model is the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! official 0-62mph time of 2.5sec and 268mph top speed. Although it's early days, officials have already advised prospective customers that the new car will be capable of eclipsing both existing benchmarks in production trim."

There is a lot more to the article so you can check it out on the autocar website. What do you think Oppo? Do you desire a theoretical 268 mph top speed? For me, it's just too much. You can't reasonably use that much power fully without losing control and crashing into a tree.Plus for the price of just one Veyron, well I could buy my veritable dream garage of cars.

its turning into the powerbike wars from before.. top speed is becoming moot since its so high now its not reasonable.

Exactly. To me there is no real difference between a car capable of 230 mph and 268 mph. I'm unlikely to approach either speed.

First thing that jumped into my head was that it's the Hyabusa all over again but this time with sprinkles. millions of dollars worth of sprinkles.

It also helps that the parent company owns the only track capable of testing top speed limits. Makes competition a moot point as there is no way to prove it for anyone else.

There's a real difference to me. About 2 million dollars worth. Money I would rather keep in my pocket, and have just as much fun in a $200k car that's not hideous.

And you run into the law of diminishing returns, where it will requiring a doubling of power just to get another 10 MPH out of it. Unless you're planning to run the thing in the vacuum of space, that is.

I don't have an issue with car companies that have the means continuing to find out just how fast a modern road car can go. Besides, Bugatti/VAG restarted the Top Speed War along with Koenigsegg, so it's only right that they continue to take part IMO.

Agreed. Glad I am not the only one who thinks the Veyron is ugly. Kinda looks like an Edsel to me.

top speed is all great.but bugatti wont let anyone test against them on their own track At essen, Its like me saying i have a mcalren f1 that does 299 mph, but i wont let you race agaisnt me to prove that it does, youll just have to trust me.

Ehra-Lessien isn't the only place with 5 straight miles. It's just that it would mean closing a public road in most cases.

closing a public road is easy,. its done all the time for Hennessy or anyone else, it just costs money; Bugatti however refuse on principle to let anyone go against a bug on Essen. So when Bugatti says their new car will do 290 mph who the hell cares? you can't test it in public and the private place(Essen) you can, refuses to allow you to.

Right. The Veyron goes fast. that is it. Its neat and all but I want fast curves and fun, not massive speed and death. Besides, I'm pretty sure that it is a Lambo, dude.

If they can prove the figures then their claim is as valid as anyone else's, and more so than "projected" or "calculated" top speeds we often get quoted for cars like this. It would be great if they had the balls to open up their giant track and say "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough," but they don't, and the fact remains that it's not the only place in the world where you can go that fast. Runways? Bonneville? Try a giant oval and then use some maths to work out how much speed the banked corner is taking off the top.

Also, if you'll excuse my pedantry, it's Ehra-Lessien . You might be confusing it with the Assen circuit in The Netherlands, or the German city of Essen which is elsewhere in the country.
