Just... just don't get a Selespeed version. My dad had one and although it was a great car, that gearbox was utter shite and repeatedly cost a lot of money to fix.

I'm looking at early manual ones, I want it to be a weekend car. Was the gearbox the only thing to go kaputt?

Not the only thing, he had a few issues with electronics but nothing life threatening, things like window motors/switches and the rear windscreen wiper. Which engine are you looking at?

My 2.5l and my dad's 2.4JTD have so far failed to bankrupt us, and we've been driving them for years :)
