I have a 2013 Escape and love it! That EcoBoost is amazing.

Can't be convinced to go the non-crossover route? The Escape is a great car for a crossover, and IMO one of the best in the segment, its just a crossover. Focus, C-Max, Fit, Fusion, Mazda3, all seem like better options for what you described. Escape is really just an expensive focus with a lift kit, so it is a bit hard to justify for me, unless you really need mild off road ability (deep snow, live on a dirt road) or are moving around a lot of elderly who need a high seat.

It's a good car. I've heard they drive well for a crossover.
Take a look at the Mazda CX-5 too. The CX-5 is fun to drive. It throws crossover standards right out the window and just pretends to be a Mazda 3. The CX-5 is also more fuel efficient and safer than the Escape.

Nay. I think they're fugly, but in general it doesn't perform as well as the competition.
I'd much rather take a CX-5, or if your girl is a speed demon, a Forester XT.

People always overlook how Mazdas hold up, though. It's also easier to get a good deal on an Escape, whereas there's not as much money on the hood of the Mazda. I don't think cranking the compression on their new engines will improve that in 5 years, either. Drive great? Sure.
In the end of the day, though, it's which one she likes more. Drive as much as possible before you can make a decision.

Need or want? I don't have much experience with Subies as daily drivers, but I'm told they tend to have marginal interior build quality and get a lot of squeaks/rattles quickly.
If the AWD is non-debatable, then Escape, or maybe even a Highlander (NOT hybrid), or Santa Fe would be a good choice.

Also, I don't know how much of this is my Ford bias coming though, but it might be worthwhile to look at an AWD fusion.

Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4? All extremely good in this segment and have AWD when they detect wheel slippage so you get better fuel economy when it's not needed. All have decent interior, features, safety, space.
