In road haulage news of a tediously pedantic nature, self driving 18 wheelers aren't here yet. The Merc truck described is in Europe and assuming it's a truck/trailer combination would have 12 or 14 wheels depending on whether the tractor has two or three axles.

This is great, so maybe only 10 years until these are starting to hit the roads in big numbers?
As much as I know the unions will hate it (try justifying a pay rise if your only job requirement is to stay awake), this is one technology that's inevitable.

As long as someone programs them to stay the f*ck out of the left lane on the interstate, I'll sing their praises from here to eternity. Nothing more aggravating than making good time down I10, when you come upon a set of two (...or three, or four, or...) tractor trailer rigs and inevitably as you approach, overtaking at 15 or 20 mph, the one in the back cannot resist the urge to pull into the left lane because he's apparently going 0.25 mph faster than the truck in front of him so he MUST choose that moment to block the left lane for the next 15 miles trying to pass the other truck. *smh*
Don't get me started with my maniacal ranting. lol
