I just saw a shady looking lady steal some perfume at Sears while the employee that was attending her went behind the counter to get another perfume. The loss prevention people went after her into the parking lot but gave up after the lady crossed to street in front of the store...

My girlfriend is a manager at a store that used to have a bus stop right in front of it. Thieves would make a dash for the door once the bus pulled up and jumped on. When they moved the bus stop, shoplifting losses went down by a huge amount.

That's how most LP works. Once they are off the premises most companies will not allow their employees to chase them. I'm certain Sears has security cameras and they have turned it over to the police (although this is Sears, who knows, they could have sold that off too). They'll just write off the loss and move on. It sucks, but that's the way it works.

One of the LP employees was on the line with mall security but they didn't show in time. I guess mall cops have a similar policy.
