I know how to drive manual. Not competitively, just the basics (I drive a car with a Twin Clutch DSG (I drive in a city)), so I'm familiar with shifting, just not manipulating the clutch to the point where I'm comfortable with heel-toe downshifting and stuff.

I thought I'd be good at it. You know, in the rookie league, driving a MX-5, how hard could it be?

Pretty hard. Right now, I'm just concentrating on driving around the track on the limit, without spinning out. I don't even know how to adjust the car to the correct settings of the track (camber, toe, all that jazz).

While not a fan of iRacing , I will give props for the amount of people who have learned to drive manual on it.

It's called i(ce)racing for a reason.

I want to get iRacing but my wheel only has brake and throttle so I'd probably just sit there revving unless it has an auto clutch option. I can do paddle shifting but other than that I can't do it.

There is an auto clutch option.

Is iRacing your first sim?

Have you driven the latest build? Many grips are to be had now with the latest updates to the tire model.

I don't play iracing but I have a 3 pedal wheel setup that I use for assetto corsa and forza 4. Ironically, heel and toeing is a lot easier than taking off from a start smoothly. It's really hard to do the latter without the feedback of g forces that I'm used to (I dd a manual IRL)

At the ALMS race in Monterey last year they had iRacing set up with a Formula Mazda.

"Ha! I've been playing Gran Turismo on this track for years, I'll show you fools how it's done!"

Come up to the corkscrew, downshift BAM SPIN. What the fuck?

Do you need a nasa pc to run it?

Iff not, I'm considering getting it

Not at all. Graphics stay pretty low so more people can play it. The physics engine is still good though.

They are also doing 3 months free right now. You should give it a try

You don't need to bother setting up cars until you're good in general/pretty good with the car you're using. Vast majority of the time the baseline/fixed setups are fast enough unless you're fighting in the top half of the top split.

Miata has less lateral grip than a lot of cars do later on, by the way. Somewhat specifically made that way so you learn to drive better by working around it early on.

I tried it with a shitty wheel and it was a shitty experience. Sadly you have to invest a lot of money before you can give it a proper evaluation. My biggest problem was not having any sense of the g forces at work and being able to get feedback from the car that you were at your limit of grip until BAM! You're into the wall and three or four people want your head on a pike.

Funny to think about how any car was a couple years ago versus how they are now. Taking the DW12 around the Glen takes an adjustment just because it has loads of grip, completely different from what I've come to expect (Especially with the IR05..).

I have a G27 wheel, but this is the exactly the problem I have with racing games. No car feedback.

SimRacing takes lots of practice... You don't feel the car. Some pro driver like Lewis Hamilton are really good on a sim also (got to race him a couple times actually... yep, not even lying :D) and other like Schumacher, are totally incapble of doing a lap without crashing and even getting sick... Also, my bet is that you are not setup anywhere near how you should be. You proably totally lack perspective... I invite you to read this.

Cheers,

(Source: me... I still have the third fastest lap ever around Lime Rock Park in the Miata :) )

Here is a tutorial I did to go around LRP... It's an old tire model, but the theory will still work with the actual car.

Actually, they pretty much fixed that in the 12/09 build. :D
