Good ole Mazda B series motors. IMO, one of the best high volume 4 pots to come out of the 80s.

Whoa now...rotary AND amg AND sc430 AND mx5? Bit greedy are we? At least change the soap bar to an sc400...

You guys kinda made my love for it go away...I now see the actual size of it. If it's as big as a Solara, I won't like it. If it's as small as a SLK, there's hope.

At 177 inches, SC430 is a foot and a half longer than a Miata or SLK, 10" longer than an FRS, 10" shorter than a Mustang, and 15" shorter than a Solara. But what kills it for me is that it's a 2 seater (not even 2+2) that weighs 3850 lbs!

That is not an issue for me though. They look good modded. Stock....not so much.

Meh, it's a decent motor, but nothing spectacular. They can handle 250 WHP on the stock internals, which is plenty for a miata. The head just doesn't flow well. The piston oil squirters are nice, but it's just not that awesome. They are cheap and plentiful, but I just wish they made more naturally aspirated power. I hate that I can never be competitive with S2000's in STR class because I can't make enough power.

You gotta think of it as a canvas. You get something that is bulletproof with just enough power that will give you much less insurance issues. You can switch quite a lot things to make it as fast as an s2000.

Yes, but not to remain class legal you can't. It's easy to build a fast street Miata, or for a video game where the classes are pretty much whatever you want them to be. In real life, it's more expensive and more difficult to build a fast, daily driveable Miata for STR. The most I can do is bolt ons, tune, and a head swap from an NB. I will be lucky to see 150 RWHP with a head shave and all of that. I'm not saying I don't love my car, but the motor is just so limited. You might see 190 RWHP on a built street motor with: cams, VVT head, pistons, better main bearings, rods, valves, springs, ported and polished head, and luck. All of that on a B18 from an Integra GSR/Type R would get you 200+ RWHP.
Unfortunately Miatas can never win in STR because of the S2000, especially the CR editions. The S2000's can also do all of the bolt ons and tune as well, making them even harder to catch. It's not a bad motor, especially with a bit of boost, but it's not that great. It's a great economy car engine.

Forgot about race class...damn. Play with weight reduction and handling I guess.

Oh certainly, but ultimately, Miatas will never beat S2000's. As far as weight reduction, you can't strip out the interior for any street class. I would love to replace all of my body panels with CF ones, but I'm not a big baller. I'm working on getting together a much better suspension for my car. All I have left to do now is the most expensive part; getting some old Koni shocks custom valved.
