Captain we've had a slight malfunction on the chopper pad.

Kinja'd!!!

Looks like a double rotor Kamov perhaps.

Sheesh.

That is scary looking. Why did it do that?

I don't care what anyone says, helicopters scare the piss out of me.

Something major failed, I have never worked on helos but the double rotor probably can be twice as bad if not looked after. Typical Russian military maintenance I imagine. I keep watching it, seems to have an engine/turbine malfunction, not a rotor issue, they fall after.

I used to fly, but I never had a desire to fly those. Autorotation is not something I want to experience.

All I can think about is an out of balance clothes washer during the spin cycle.

That seems like a reasonable explanation.

I really don't know that much about helicopters. I didn't know what to make of it when I first watched it.

I've been in a controlled autorotation, and it was surprisingly not bad.

More troubling is what happens if you don't get into a controlled autorotation, what the manual dryly calls an "unstable flight condition."

The best description of a helicopter that I've ever read: "it's collection of parts loosely organized around an oil leak".

I still want to fly in one.

The jumping around makes me think a rotor is unbalanced. Possibly a rotor strike on landing and the vibration tore apart the transmission which is why the rotors fall off in the end.

Ground resonance. Pretty much an out of sync vibration.

It looks like a good example of "ground resonance" as indicated by the helicopter hopping around before things explode.

Basically, in certain instances when on the ground, the landing gear is unable to dampen out the vibrations of the rotor and the vibrations get exponentially worse. This usually ends when the rotor starts to flap so much that it strikes something and things go BOOM.

In this instance, the two counter-rotating rotors hit each other.

Ahh, ground resonance. One of many reasons I'm more a fan of flying forward than in whatever the hell direction the rotors want to go.

Also, that little spout of flame and smoke at the end makes this. Like the helicopter is saying "fuckit, I'm done."

Looks more like the rotor got unbalanced, or maybe a bearing on the shaft failed. just a turbine issue would not wobble the helo that much imho since they can typically fly with a failed turbine.

NVM missed the "Ground resonance" posts, after looking them over I agree with them.

Looks like the rotors became unbalanced for some reason and then contacted each other. That did the usual major damage. Might have even ripped an engine out.

It looks like everything was ripped out, seems like a lot flew out in the rear. At least nothing hit the cockpit, seems like everything went back.
