"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

As Automatch Tom/Tom McP. pointed out to us today, it is possible to buy your way into the full-fledged life of British aristocracy for the same price as a Honda Civic. Okay, that isn't entirely true, but if you're anything like me, you found the W12 Continental for the price of a nice pickup or minivan to be very tempting. Trouble is, Bentley doesn't have exclusive rights to make classy British GT cars that depreciate at an almost amusing rate. Aston Martin is also very good at this. So, Oppo, I ask you, which would you rather have?
Your first choice is this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! It comes in a nice dark blue with a tan interior, a great color combination if you ask me, which you didn't. It appears to be in mint shape, with just under 34k miles on the clock. It really is the last word in luxury grand touring for under $65k, which coincidentally, is what it's priced at.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
But it isn't. From the same year, with the same color combo and the same number of cylinders, in the same condition, you could have this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Coupe. Only difference is, it is $7000 cheaper, and has 20k fewer miles, with just over 12,000 on the clock. It also seems to be in pristine order, as Q would say, and arguably packs even more style into the bargain. It is gorgeous. And because I know you would really only look at one variable in this comparison, I eliminated it. This DB9 is an automatic, which is what a GT car should be (flame suit).
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Both of these cars are very similar, yet they have many differences. So which would you take? The faster, more grown up, AWD Bentley? Or the sexy, sleek, low-mileage Aston Martin?

The Bentley isn't more grown up than the Aston Martin, it is just more geriatric.
That being said, most Bentley's I've seen are driven by rappers/producers and are tacky, gaudy, and over-accessorized. Every Aston Martin I've seen has been driven tastefully by someone in their late 50s who earned it. Granted, my sample size isn't very large.

My mom is looking at getting a new car and if I could find one of these for less than $40k, I think I could talk her into it.

Aston for sure, if I'm going to own a Bentley it must be:
A) Four door.
or
B) Convertible and square.

I don't know what I'd pick. I'd have to drive them both.
The Aston because RWD probably, but for 64k I can think of a lot of classics and pre-war cars that I'd rather own.

At least when I was in Florida, plenty of Astons are being driven around on 22's by "rappers".

That's not really "forced". "Forced" is choosing between a Geo Metro and a Hyundai Accent.
"Sorry, Muffy darling, the board of directors has cut my CEO salary by 30%. No Rolls-Royce for us. I'll have to buy either a Bentley or an Aston Martin. Don't cry darling, it'll be okay. We'll make it through this".
I kid, of course.

I'm not killing anyone! They're both great cars. And that "VW" is basically the exact same as my car. At least, that's what I tell myself...
BTW how long 'til you get the GTI?

She likes German cars, I did try to talk her into a CTS but that didn't go as well as I'd hoped. I think she'll probably get a Mercedes.

I would daily drive the SHIT out of a Metro. 50 mpg out of something small, light, and all manual, definitely. Bonus points for a Chevy Sprint Turbo.

I wouldn't want it as a weekend car, but barely paying anything for gas every week would be great.

I would love to not pay much for gas, but driving something that slow, poorly made, and lacking in creature comforts would make me very, very cranky.

Well here is Matt Farah's opinion on it. http://www.celebritycarsblog.com/2012/01/ccb-si… Also, Jeremy Clarkson referred to it as the transmission that didn't know it was a transmission, because it was incredibly slow and always hunting.

The creature comforts that I have are: a/c, cheap radio with aux jack, broken power mirrors, broken cruise control, broken speedo, and slow power windows. Granted, that is surrounded by Toyota build quality, so it is still together. Two of those problems are also caused by a bad sensor, so it isn't that hard of a fix, if I can get the broken sensor boot out of it's hole. I can live with very little and be just fine.

I wouldn't mind a new car under warranty or at least something under a decent warranty with options and technology, but I don't like wiring at all. So simple to me is better. Now if I had the money would I go out and by a new M4 or RS7, yes. In a realistic world though, I'd rather have less to go wrong that I would have to pay for.

It's a fun little car. Fun little cars need to be in fun colors like red. Save black for when you get yourself a boring, grown-up car.
