Drives well on the highway with minor vibrations, the Duratec is not too bad on fuel economy.
The tailgate is a bit paranoid to the locking system. It sometimes didn't lock or unlock, even when the rest of the car has.
I just need to do the paperwork and get the title, and then it's mine.

The tailgate thing is a known problem. There might even be a recall for it.

The recall has been done already, so either the fixed part is faulty or the job wasn't done at all. Putting in the VIN on the recall site shows nothing.

I can't remember what we replaced on ours, but we had the same problem. I found a latch recall for it, not sure if it fixed that problem or not.

Their fun little trucks, my cousin had a yellow one for the longest time. She has nothing but good things to say about her 2003 Escape. She has since gotten rid of it though :(

The problem only happened after I opened the tailgate and closed it for the first time. It was working on and off. If the car didn't move, it always worked. after a drive, it stopped. It wouldn't even lock at one point.

Wait, I didn't follow what happened recently. Where did you get that Escape?

I'm debating here, fix this truck and sell it and get a car, or use this as a work mule, and get the car later. That would be 5 cars at my household; the Odyssey, BMW, Jetta, Escape, and the sporty coupe I'm wanting to get. I guess it's time to branch off, but I'm out of work.

Yeah we had the exact symptoms. Think it was the lock actuator or something. I'm sure it's all over the web if you search.

It's a family friend's car. He's moving away, so he's getting rid of everything. He's selling it to me for $500. car's been sitting for a few weeks at a time, over the past 2 years.

the actuator is like $5 on ebay, but I'd prefer to buy it at a parts store.

I would tear down the interior panel and see what the problem is. Could be the whole handle assembly or even just the rod.

That's the plan, If I can open the tailgate, even better, don't have to cut it open, and source a "new" panel.

I'd keep it and maybe sell it later or keep it along side a car. Its something you'd regret selling without any legitimate thought into keeping it. There's just nothing like an early escape.
