I dream of owning a Rolex just to say I have a Rolex. I'll deal with my Relic for a while though, it's nice I just keep forgetting to wear it.

I don't like watches for the vanity, I find it interesting that time and thought went into designing and building something so intricate, beautiful and functional. But boy would I love a 1962 Rolex Submariner with a tanzanite dial and a dark green Nato strap, just like Connery.

Very nice. I've sadly only got three wristwatches, but I'd like to get more.

A quartz Timex from the 70s.

A skeleton automatic from a company called Relic. Foreign movement, but it has a 12 year warranty, which I thought was impressive.

And a fake Rolex Submariner that I bought from some bloke in Atlanta.

Half my watches are cheapos. My prerequisites for watches:

-Must be accurate

-Must look nice

-Must be made well

-Other than the above I could care less about brand

I wouldn't want it just so I can say I had one. I do like their watches and think they're really neat. I don't know if I'd buy if I had the money though. Watches are really interesting.

I'm not really a brand snob. Watches are some of the few Chinese products that I have been deeply impressed by, especially automatics. I love my Relic.

The require such a high degree of precision and accuracy to be useful, and they mass produce them and yet all of them seem to work really well. It astounds me. Even a watch with over a 99.99% accuracy will still loose/gain a noticeable amount of time.

I don't see the point of spending a ridiculous amount on a vintage Rolex or Omega when a good looking mass-producing watch will keep better time.

It's easier to get a cheap, accurate watch than an expensive, accurate watch.

There's snobbery about having an "automatic" mechanical versus a quartz because of the complexity and craftsmanship, not for accuracy. Though there are lots of mechanical watches that are beautiful and very well made.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with an affordable watch that's accurate, mechanical or electronic. It's much like the ethos around here about cars—if it speaks to you , it's cool.

I see the point in buying vintage rolexes, but only if I have money to burn. I dont, I'm perfectly content buying US Polo Assn and Accutime watches.

Swiss watches are of higher build quality and accuracy. Swatch makes affordable swiss watches. Also automatic watches are basically mechanical except instead of having to wind it it has a counter eight that winds itself with the movement of your body, also it has no battery or electronics

I can appreciate them, but I just can't ever see me wanting to commit that much money to a watch when I could get car stuff instead.

I'm more fascinated with them from an engineering/craftsman standpoint rather than a collector's standpoint.

Ive got myself a couple Swatch Irony Chronos that I use occasionally. I also got an ESQ and my usual every day watch, a Tag Heuer Formula 1 Grande Date. Ive been shopping for a new watch, however I love my Tag so much I can't bear to not wear it.

Kinja'd!!! NotUnlessRoundIsFunny > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

My collection is pretty eclectic. I started with a couple of Victorinox / Swiss Army watches I really like, and eventually got into some higher-end mechanicals like IWC and Rolex. I don't pretend there's anything rational about it, it's just what "speaks to me."

My normal daily wear watch is a special edition IWC that is totally different from anything else I own:

And my most recent acquisition is a Shinola, which is actually assembled in Detroit!

http://www.shinola.com/shop/watches/m…

There's something interesting about the result of so much mechanical development and obsession, especially now that it's totally unnecessary. The average quartz watch is more accurate and you can get the time from your smartphone, but there's just something fun about watches.

The Shinola is cool, even though it's quartz and many of the components are made overseas. But you have to try them on, because some of them are pretty huge—mine is almost too big for my wrist!

There are plenty of other useful complications. Day of the week, month, moon phase, useful bezel. (I'm wearing a mechanical manual wind watch that only tells time at the moment, so I understand where you are coming from, it's just that other stuff is useful sometimes.)
