Drives okay, but needs new brakes. Interior smells like dog, but still good. Tailgate got stuck closed on my inspection, and I couldn't open it up. Handbrake cable is useless. Asking price is $500.
Bodywork most certainly is needed. I don't have a garage to do filler at, so.. NOW what?
Also snagged a Kenwood head unit and some automotive maintenance stuff as well, since he is getting rid of everything. I haven't officially bought the car just yet.

500 bucks seems like NP territory.
I mean it's 500 bucks and it drives. 100 bucks or so in some new brakes and off you gooooo

I used to drive my mom's Escape in my younger days until it spun a bearing. That V6 had some balls, even if they were tiny.

I'd do it, but don't bother with body work. There is just no way it will be worth it.

beware, you'll end up replacing the brakes every couple years, and if you have someone do it, it's like 500 bucks, the brakes on my moms '05 escape with like 130k miles on it have been replaced 3 or 4 times

$500 bucks is NP for anything that runs and drives.
I'd forget about the bodywork and just concentrate on brakes, e-brake, the stuck hatch, and whatever else safety or operation related that crops up. On a $500 car, things WILL crop up. Without major work, the body rot will likely continue to worsen. Unless you really want to sink a large amount of time, work, and cash into an old Escape, I don't see much point in repairing it.

I DD a Mercury Mariner and it's not too painful. Five hundred for a running car is NP.

My former boss had an Escape of that gen that went well over 200,000 miles before it started having any issues. And she is incredibly hard on her vehicles.

I won't keep it for long, and one rotor is stuck on. Might need a sledgehammer.

The hatch opened at first, but stopped after. There's no manual override, and the motor doesn't work any more.

500 bucks?
What the hell are you replacing? I just went on advanceautoparts and added 4 replacement rotors and ceramic brake pads for an 05 escape V6 and I'm at 262.94 and a saturday afternoon in the driveway. If you're going through quality brake parts every 2 years, something else is wrong. Either really cheap pads (maybe you had someone do the brakes for you and they bait and switched you on brake pads) or your calipers are bad.

don't fo down long grades with bad brakes, we did once and the abs comes on, the steering column shakes (which I know is part of what abs does) and it makes it very hard to steer.

If the pedal was pulsing as well, then it's fine,
the brakes at the moment are okay, but are wearing thin.

definitely. I won't keep it long though, but may use it to tow a car I want to buy too, so I don't have to rely on the mom van.

lol. I'd check its tow rating, to my knowledge best equipped is only about 3000 pounds.
And I checked because some genius was saying it was 500+ every 2 years for brakes on one of these.
New ceramic (lifetime warranty) pads and rotors for all 4 are $260 something.

It has a factory rating of 3500 actually. I saw it written on the factory hitch.
The front rotors need replacing and the ABS light is on, (the sensor probably tripped) not sure about the drums on the rear if they need any love. This is a 2001 M/Y.

That'll be a while. The engine is in very good condition. and has about 180K Kms on it.

The V6 is a great engine. It's the Duratec, which is in a lot of cars. Jags, Fords, Mazdas, etc . . .

All of those generation escapes have that hatch release issue. You can use some Tuff Stuff cleaner to get rid of that wet dog smell and old coffee grounds to absorb the stink. Its a good rustbucket for $500 either way.

The hatch has been fixed in the recall, everything has been. If there's a manual override somehow behind the interior, then I could see if I could fix it up.

The 2005 got updated brakes in the form of larger front rotors and rear disks to fix this very issue which earlier eces are known for. Our 2003 has had 1 set and wheel bearings (loud since we got it in 05). For the OP watch out for coil packs crapping out. Ours started failing Around 120k miles and will start with loss of power and misfiring at higher revs. One more issue is the alternator which is a beatch to get to. Other than that great engine, let down slightly by sluggish trans, but you got a steal ;)

What engine did you have the coil pack issue on? 4 or 6 cylinder?
