I want to be as Jalop as this guy was.

Building on mr. gofast's thread, found some more info from a restoration shop. Great story - was a gift from his dad for his graduation. A guy I'd definitely love to have met and had a beer with...

Well cared for all its life, it was a treat to restore. Once done, we called to ask Allen when he would like it delivered. "Delivered?" he said. "I'll pick it up." And he did. A robust individual in his eighties at this point. he gave the car a good look over, thanked all involved, paid the bill. and asked the easiest route to the Merritt Parkway. He'd come down on the Interstate. but felt the Merritt, an older more twisty four-lane parkway more appropriate for his shiny green Rolls Royce. They don't build the cars or the owners like they used to! Drive on!

Perhaps most important, Swift's father had many years to watch his son cherish and care for this gift of a lifetime. And the son had many more years in his extraordinarily long life to treasure a loving gift from his dad.

I doubt if any of us has the means to buy our kid a Rolls for his/her graduation, but the connection that we can make with our kids by working on and enjoying cars together can be a shared passion that can last a lifetime, helping to keep family bonds tight. Can't wait to help my kids pick out their first cars, and pass on whatever knowledge and passion I can to them.

M. Allen Swift of Massachusetts holds the Guinness World Record for longest-standing original owner. The length of time he drove his car may never be beaten: He was given his 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Picadilly Roadster new as a graduation gift, and drove it for an astounding 77 years.

He stopped driving, according to the Hartford Courant, only shortly before his death in October 2005, aged 102. The car covered 170,000 miles in that time, largely around Hartford, Connecticut, where Swift managed his family's precious metals business.

Yeah, my kids will be getting cars with reasonable horsepower and a manual.

I think a well-maintained BRZ might be just about right 8 years from now.

What would an M235i go for by then? Way too much power for a first car...

228i maybe.

Last offered in '98. By the time my oldest could drive it, it'd be ready to qualify for classic tags. Super Jalop points!

According to the museum that now holds it, the car was a birthday present, not a graduation present. Either way it's a great story!
