I see several sources referring to Tesla's lower cost third model as the Model 3. Is this official? I heard that Model E was out, but I missed the announcement of Model 3. I guess you can still sort of do the S3X trick that way.

Yup, it's the same car by a different name AFAIK.
SEX is no longer on the table since Ford killed it, but S3X is.

I figure BMW is going to go after the Model 3 at some point, though Audi also has the A3.
Model 3 also sounds kind of similar to Model E, so I dunno if they're totally out of the woods yet with Ford.
