Simple situation. you need something capable of hauling 2 people, a bundle of wood and some more camping/picnic gear for about $4000. What do you buy and why?

Kinja'd!!!

Disclaimer: I may buy an old truck in the next year or two, so I can go camping/trailing/to outdoor activities/yardwork!

not a Comanche that's for sure, a decent one of those will run you over $5000. For $4000 you have an embarrassment of choices in the domestic full size category. I recommend GMT400 trucks (1988-2000 GM)

My XJ is not on the market, but you can't swing a cat without hitting one. More than capable of hauling two people, camping stuff, and a motorcycle on a trailer, mine was $2000. Pretty easy to maintain, parts are dirt cheap, 4.0L engine will get you at least 250k miles no problem.

I shoul add this is the SXT Trim, screw that. Go with the most base level van you can find.

90s Silverado/Sierra

Kinja'd!!!

Or maybe something more along the lines of an S10/Sonoma**

Kinja'd!!!

**S10/Sonoma will need 4.3 V6 if you want to tow something.

XJ gets my vote as well. That AMC I6 is bulletproof.

I'd buy a '90something Toyota Hilux Diesel.

Kinja'd!!!

I CAN get one for about 4k USD, but since cars are bloody expensive in Norway I feel that I'm alowed to cheat a tiny bit, a 4k car in the US would cost about 7 or 8K here, so I could probably get one with bigger tyres and stuff.

As for why? Well, it's a Toyota Hilux Diesel, what else could I need?

a friend has a '94 Silverado with the 350/auto combo. I've driven it. burnouts for days! I love that truck to bits!

I actually am considering getting a '92-'96 Silverado. :P

Dodge Dakota. They can be had all day long for 4k or less, bonus points because manual v8 4x4. Mine, a '95, averages 18.5 mixed (mostly city).

After doing 70mph on I94 removed one of them for me, I decided to go ahead and removed all four, then chopped the fenders a bit for extra flexy clearance. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/took-an-angle-…

If you were to do a pick-up, Id at least get an extended cab. Weather does not always cooperate. A hatch would always be fun. Or if you need more space a wagon.

It'd be hard to even come close to its 5000 pound tow capacity with a motorcycle, lol. I've been looking at them for a winter vehicle that can also tow my Z if need be. Hopefully get a truck before the Z needs towing though

Oh, I'm sure they could tow more... but mine's lifted, with mud tires, and 245k on the engine so I take it easy! Trying to keep gas mileage in double digits and all :P

I've camped in one of the two I've owned a few times and it was great. More than enough room, get decent mileage for a 4x4, great after market and can be found dirt cheap.

I like the XJ a lot, and there always seem to be a bunch of them for sale.

Question, irrespective of reliability, is this: XJ or a Disco II? And, would I care about either coming from my car-centric world of driving?

Never owned or driven a Disco II, so I can't say much besides that with an XJ you'll have more money left over for another car :P

Yeah, the stoocckkk rating is a max of 5k, haha :) and I don't think any XJ owner would want to go anywhere near towing 5 thousand pounds without a brake equipped trailer at least

You are lucky. We got the 22RE(slow) and the 3VZE(not as slow, but slow and eats headgaskets).
