This came across my facebook news feed this morning. I thought it was cool so I'm sharing it. This is the Tyrrell P34 which campaigned the 1976 and 1977 Formula 1 season. There was quite an interesting article written up about it on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

One of the things that I find particularly interesting is how they decided to do the steering linkage.

P34 is one of the greatest F1 innovations ever. It even won one race in Anderstorp. It suffered from the tire size that didn't get much R&D attention from the manufacturer but otherwise the advantages and disadvantages of the design were pretty even. But it did attract a lot attention. The sponsors hit it big time when they had their name in the car.
When the 6-wheel controversy was peaking Ferrari decided to mess with the press and leaked an image of a eight wheeler prop that they had constructed from loose parts. The photographers were waiting to get photos from the eight wheeler and completely disregarded their real racers development.

Cool indeed; I actually built a 1/32 model of that in '78... wish I still had it (and my 1/12 JPS Lotus model too- she was a stunner).
Post makes me want to dig out my vintage "FORMULA" magazines, I was subscribing when this car ran.

I never really gave much thought on how they'd get all four wheels to turn. Fairly simple solution, I like.

The only issue I have with it is single-point-failure. If a tie rod on one of the fronts starts to get loose, the whole side is loose. Maybe that kind of thing doesn't happen in top tier racing but the engineer in me doesn't like having the rears slaved off of the fronts. Still cool and clever though.
