Oppo challenge: find a safer, more desirable conveyance for less than fifteen K.

For a baseline, this is a 2oo7 550i. It's a piece of shit, I've repaired almost every gasket, and all the valve seals, and a lot more, but it's beautiful and drives like nothing else. It's a killer drive. I like it more than I want to admit. But it's not a long-term thing, unless I'm willing to invest in it, which I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Photo's mine. RWD, fake manual, 4.8l mahfackin V8.

What would you buy?

E90 325/328/330i. The NA I6's are bulletproof. I've had no issues with my 328i. You can also get it as a wagon!

I want a wagon pretty badly. Been looking. Biggest criteria are no AWD, and no turbos.

I looked pretty seriously at an LS. That might be the answer.

Done. Look around a little more if you want 3 pedals. You may end up paying a little more though.

I can't stomach Audi problems. I've driven an S8, and loved it, but I can't DD one for years.

This one is a bit of a wild card, but most of them are low mileage, super safe and newish (2010), plus I think they look great.

OK, it seems like you enjoy luxo-cruisers, so given those criteria, I'mma have to go with Citroen on this one and second the LS.

I've kinda always lusted after them myself.

RWD, nice N/A V8, reliable as an unintended stiffy in middle school.

I'm buying old. If I had a new car's warranty, sure, no problem. If I have to maintain it myself, no fuckin way.

I don't. I drove a mid-engined convertible for 8 1/2 years. Citroens aren't an option in Texas.

I wasn't suggesting that you get a Citroen. Do you think I'm SOME KIND OF FOREIGN MONSTER?

E91/2 is pretty close. Can't really long-term an audi, and subarus (judging only by the STI I've driven) aren't close to an option. They drive like pigs.

"Fake manual" is a 6spd shiftable auto.

Not as much as the badmotherfucker 550. It was pretty much pristine, for a car that old, but it was so 1992. It was crazy fast, felt like a refined Crown Vic cop car. But for some more money, the 550 had so much more goin on that it deserves all caps.

Well there are cars like the 550i, but there's nothing out there that will be every bit the car it is AND cheap to work on, You not the first person to want this, but the fact is, the Germans build great cars that are extremely expensive to work on. You won't get hi-tech, fast, comfortable, safe, stylish, luxurious, AND cheap to work on. Trust me, I spent a long time looking.

I second the Lexus LS430, particularly the (IMO) gorgeously understated without being boring 2004-2006 models. Not as great to drive as the 550i, but it has its own more tame and relaxing charm. While we're talking about V8 Lexuses, the Gs430 is also worth a look, but I'd guess the GS's extra bit of sportiness wouldn't overcome the LS's luxury.

My favorite idea is the second generation Infiniti M45 preferably with the Sport package. Car and Driver liked it more than the 550i in 2007, so it's probably the closest you'll get to the 550i driving experience without 550i headaches.

Another suggestion. 1st gen Cadillac CTS-V. It won't be as polished as the 550i, but the LS2+manual combination promises to be very exciting. Under $15k you're looking at around 100,000 miles and those are probably hard miles.

Two final ideas. Post-2005 manual Infiniti G35 or a manual Acura TL. The TL is FWD, but the manual ones have a torsen LSD.

That is a fact. They are pretty over-engineered. Lots of sensors and limiters to cause a fault and a light on the dash; then the coin flip whether or not it is a real problem or just outside of the German 0.00000001% tolerance they seem to default to.

The 5 series is only going to tank in depreciation.

Kinja'd!!!

This Jaguar XJR however, will only go up in price. 400HP supercharged V8 and a top-tier suspension, it's probably more fun than the 5 series to drive. 0-60 in 5 seconds.

Best of all? AMG transmission. It's a tragic autobox, but it's still the same transmission you'd get in an S55 AMG of the same era.

Desirability is more than just looks.

Kinja'd!!! phenotyp > GhostZ

If it crashes as well as the 5er... The point of buying the 550 was that I needed a car that would baby (unlike, say, an MR2...) that I didn't hate. But me not hating it was less important than feeling like my daughter in the back was as safe as I could possibly afford.

I've never had much love for British cars other than the F1, though that era Jag is strangely compelling. The other major consideration is how good a warranty I could buy with it. The warranty I bought on the 5er saved my ass. So... Tough one.
