WWII Porsche creation. At first they were called Ferdinand later Elefant. They absolutely demolished Soviet armor, but there were too few of these monsters to make any significant impact. As far as engineering.... It has 2 Maybach engines powering generators to make electricity for the drive motors, rather unusual concept for the time. Like any good Porsche it was highly labor intensive to maintain.

When they didn't break down (which wasn't often and why so many still exist) The Tiger II was a beast. Very few Allied guns could hurt it at range. Its gun was one of the most accurate of the war (probably the most, but I think the KwK 42 of the Panther was more accurate either way German guns were extremely accurate)

Wasn't the whole idea that it was slow, but unstoppable, meant to push forward no matter what got thrown at it?

Mostly true. They didn't develop a better engine for it so they used the best they had. The Engine (read: entire drivetrain) was way to overworked, and didn't handle the 70 to monster so well, hence breaking down all the time. The Germans were working on larger vehicles than this. The Panzer VIII Maus was the next step up, they actually built one. It weighed 207 tons. It had a 128mm main gun with a 75mm gun in coax. Interestingly this is also a Porsche creation. There were larger machines that existed only on paper Like the 1000 ton Ratte, or even a 1500 ton gun carriage for a railway gun.

Not quite the gun they wanted to build but it gives an idea.

Exactly. I think they were thinking along the lines of the Schwerer Gustav. Here is a shell for one.

Wasn't the Ratte planned to be fitted with a ship's cannon? Goddamn I love those amazing German concepts...

According to the all knowing wiki it would've had a twin gun version of a battleship turret. Here is a diagram the wiki article linked to.

Those are Maus turrets as secondary armament.

As you can see it shoots ammo that is almost as large as a T34.

I don't remember where this was taken, but I believe it was eastern Germany.
