These were sold in Canada and from the Manitoba plate it looks like they moved there from north of the 49

I bet the DMV doesn't even notice since it was so boring.

You're probably the first person to ever notice an Echo.

I'm from Canada. Wait, what, the Echo wasn't sold in the States? Where I'm from this is the only gen of Echo. Previous ones were called Tercel here, and newer ones are called Yaris. I know they were called Vitz in Japan, but I thought the U.S. names were the same as Canada.

Yeah, in some markets (read: most markets) this was the first-gen Yaris...there's one toodling around my area too...

So, what was it called in the U.S., then? Or was the Corolla their entry-level Toyota?

It was here, but only in a plasticlad sedan (and maybe coupe).

I had a chance to drive a roommate's Echo once. The gas pedal wasn't so much of a pedal as it was an on/off switch. The exact opposite of what you'd want in an economy car.

I always wanted an Echo hatchback/Vitz in RS form.

No hatchback? Weird. What about the Yaris hatch? I remember Rutledge Wood having one in a TG US episode.
I know they make Echo and Yaris in sedan and Echo in coupe, but when I think Echo and Yaris, I think hatch. Most of them here are either 3 or 5 door hatches. I don't know if I've even seen an Echo coupe (though I know they exist).
Either way, the sedan in your pic is the same generation as the hatch above.

Yeah, we got the Yaris hatch. It's not a bad looking little car, but supposedly Toyota sapped the life out of the driving character.
Yeah, I remember the Vitz from Gran Turismo 2 and as a young lad, I recall staring at the US model and crying inside. I didn't find out that the first gen came to Canada until they'd stopped selling them. I still hunt ebay motors from time to time.

My mom has a 5-door Yaris. No-one should expect edge-of-your-seat excitement in an economy car. For a practical, inexpensive car, it's pretty fun to drive. As far as driving excitement goes, the only knock against it I can give is that the power curve is pretty limp. Dropping a couple of gears will chirp the tires, but there's no use in revving the balls of it.
"the first gen came to Canada until they'd stopped selling them. I still hunt ebay motors from time to time."
This is the same generation. Check the door shape:

Oh, I don't expect performance. I expect the kind of steering feel approaching what I get in my Mazda 2, though.

There are still a fair number of Echos around SW Ontario. My mom has a 2000-ish one that she admits is awfully gutless, but the 50mpg makes it worth it as a city runabout.
There aren't nearly as many Echos around here as there used to be. Most of them have rusted out or just simply expired due to high mileage. A car built to a specific price point that also appeals to high mileage drivers tend to live short lives in the lands of salty winters.

As the current owner of a 03 Toyota Echo which I love by the way (but it's my first car so who isn't going to love it?) I've often considered getting a newer Yaris and just slapping the old Echo logo on it :) I was under the impression that it is known as the Yaris in the US but known as the Echo in Japan.

My grandfather (1925) drives one just like it. It's the first generation Yaris here though. We never got a sedan version of this or any newer gen Yaris.

Wow, that four door is fugly. I mean when that was born the mid wife slapped the mother not the baby.

Am I the only one that notice Can-Am Mullet?
(Manitoba in the front, Tennessee in the rear.)

That is the most boring looking car I've ever seen.

I don't understand newer than what generation of Echo? You guys didn't get these?

Not this gen

Weird. That's the first gen 1999-2005 version. The only Echo we ever got up here. I think it was 2006 when they switched the name t0 Yaris.

We never got the hatch

Oh yeah, you guys got saddled with the horrid little sedan. Not too many of those here. Unpopular choice. Weird thing about the newest one is the sedan is based on a more current gen platform than the hatch.

we never got the 4 door hatch, so this was/is canadian

I'm still trying to understand the newer generation part, as this is the 1999-2005 model and there wasn't (as far as I can tell) an Echo available before that.
On a side note, I have a doctor friend who drives his @005 Echo RS hatch daily, even though he also owns a Lexus and an Audi. He loves the ridiculous highway mileage, as his commute is 170 miles, 3 days a week.
