And then refuse to clean them?

Kinja'd!!!

I mean it will take you what, maybe an extra hour to grab some degreaser and some rags and clean it up a bit. It will also make your engine bay look 1000x better and more desirable if you are trying to sell it.

But no, thats okay, just take some picks of your dirty, greasy, shit covered motor that you are claiming to be rebuilt becasue you're lazy, which, in turn, makes me think you were too lazy to properly rebuild the motor.

Haven't you watched Antique Roadshow? Never clean your stuff. It's always worth more when you don't.

Why do people buy old things... and then clean the patina off?

I swear I saw an episode with an elderly lady and a coffee table. The self-righteous appraiser was making a big deal about it being rare and extremely valuable then said it was only worth a few hundred because she used some furniture restore polish that now made it worthless. I imagined this poor old lady carrying out the coffee table by herself.

Time? I pulled out the motor in my Legacy a few years ago to replace valve cover gaskets and clutch. and it was winter and cold out so I didn't have time to fully clean it just the mating surfaces of the valve cover gasket. Beyond that people should clean it when its out.

I'd rather have a dirty engine. Say they clean off the oil that was seeping out where it's not supposed to. It's easier to spot problem areas.

Thats the point, problem areas shouldn't exist when you properly rebuild the motor.

OOPS, didn't read the rebuild part. I just though you meant pulling the engines and selling them. I guess that would make sense, but I'm not someone who really cares about what my engine looks like. If it's a fire hazard, then it's a problem.

I didn't clean mine because I only had weekends to work on it and had limited time to get it driving for an event. I intended to use that time to clean it up and paint the engine bay, etc. I even bought engine paint. As it is, I only got it in 2 weeks beforehand and had the weekend before to make sure it was up for the trip. I wasn't wasting any time that didn't contribute to helping the car move under it's own power. Mine was just a straight swap though, no rebuilding required.

Where I work, the engine is clean when it goes in the car. Most times it gets resprayed. Of course, we're a restoration garage so the whole purpose is for things to be nice.

If I'm rebuilding: clean utterly lest any dirt gets inside

If I'm just pulling the engine: don't bother, grease and oil is a protective layer over the engine that will prevent corrosion. I'm not that precious over how a car looks, especially the engine bay.
