The term "free content" doesn't really make sense, because the content is provided to the user on Youtube while being supported by ads.
Putting up a paywall for more content hasn't really worked very well on the internet, except on websites where there are adults doing very adult things. This isn't something I want to see Mike Spinelli doing.

This is where TV/Movies/YouTube get it all wrong.

I did wonder why it seemed like content had petered off a bit, especially Chris Harris. Glad to see that it's not a gradual drifting away, but shame about monetary problems.
Also, do you get money for any old Youtube video if it gets enough hits, or is it only contracted ones?

I'll probably wait and see how much they're planning to offer as paid, and then end up subscribing. Like he said, they have to make it a profitable business model. If some of us don't buck up and support work like this, there just won't be this kind of high-quality, high-access programming out there for the automotive enthusiast.
Maybe they need to partner with Leno and Seinfeld...

Great... These guys definitely deserve to make some cash but I am not going to pay $40 to watch it. As soon as you add a paywall you can wave a lot of the view base goodbye. Loved tuned, big muscle and chris harris on cars but I can get that fix elsewhere. Best of luck to them, hope it is a success but I refuse to pay for a subscription on youtube.

SUB-SCRIBED within 60 seconds of announcement. I've been expecting this since Harris asked for opinions a few months ago...and frankly, I would have paid more :D Less than a single new game for a year.

I just don't think a pay to watch model will work on youtube. I really like Chris Harris but one minute teaser videos (if that's what it turns into) on the "Free" channel telling you to watch the full clip on the pay side will just run off the "free" channel subscribers.

It's free for the viewer.
I agree 100% with the second part.

so long /drive stuff on YouTube was meant to be free not to be charged for.

40$ a year. Not sure if all the exclusive content on there is worth it. Don't get me wrong, it probably is top notch stuff, but there are alternatives out there for free.

"Not available in your country" [Germany]. Fuck!
Would gladly pay for (good) content since I love /drive, but this is ruining my day right now...
Hope they will open up the content for German viewers too.

I enjoy watching Drive from time to time. It's a good way to kill time but I certainly don't enjoy it enough to pay for it that's for damn sure.

Man, too bad, I really loved Harris, Farah, Spinelli. I wish it could go to netflix, or have some sort of outlet like CCC.
Sure I could afford it, but I have too many random monthly/annual expenses as it is. Plus there's just too much free stuff out there, and I only care about a small portion of the stuff Drive produces.
Wish them luck.

As a content producer for a fee based instructional service, I can say that this is a reality of the internet. Free never actually means free. If you don't have to pay for something out of pocket on the internet, you're either being advertised to, your data is being collected and sold, or both. Production budgets can get crazy and percentage of revenue from sources like YouTube simply aren't enough to afford those budgets.
Sure, I'd love to continue to see all the /Drive content without having a subscription, but I know the reality of the situation and I respect Chris for being honest and forthright about it.

Really would like to know how much content a subscription gets you. Would hope it's at least one "full length" show per week. I can go rent a DVD from Redbox for $1/week, so is 2 hours of new, exclusive content per week a reasonable expectation? $40/year, is the season going to have at least 40 weeks of new content? Also can I just wait till the end of the season , pay for a single month (or use a "Free 14-day Trial") and binge watch all the content from the prior season? Too many unanswered questions.

The reality is that you can get all of this content elsewhere for free though. There maybe a small group that decides to ante up, a group that just deals with the free content and the group that this pushes off. I am betting the latter is the more prevalent.

You're correct, there is a lot of auto related content that is "free" on YouTube. However, most of it is shot with crappy gear, has piss-poor audio, zero editing, no congruity etc. Anybody can grab a friend and their iPhone and go hoon about in some dealership's cars for sale on the cheap. To get those silky slow-motion shots of Chris drifting exotics on a closed course is an entirely different ball-game. The camera gear, editing software, computers, manpower add up incredibly fast.
Everyone wants something for free, but if you asked them to do it for free, how many would? That's why you now have to pay for this. It's not profitable, which means these guys are now doing this without compensation. So you have to ask yourself, do you want drive to go away completely? That's the other option here is that they just stop. Or they scale back so far on their production budget that they become the guy with an iPhone in a rented Camaro.

I have done production work before so I know very well how expensive it can get. I was talking about getting this content, meaning these /DRIVE episodes in other places. They will be out there, just like you can find the Top Gear episodes right after they have aired.
What Chris doesn't talk about is that they just signed a deal with NBCSN. That is the goal of a lot of people that put out free content on YouTube. Then right after they do that they also start a subscription channel. I'll be interested to see how they differentiate the content between /DRIVE+ and what's on NBCSN.
