...drop what they're doing and help you search for a lost train pass. And then, when they can't find it, eagerly fill out a police report on the missing train pass and promise to contact you as soon as they have any leads.
THANKS, OMAWARI-SAN!*
* - , noun, common word, police officer, lit. "walking around person," patrolman/woman.

Nice! Our police aren't very hostile but they don't usually have friendly attitude either. At least not in big cities. Even their basic uniform looks like a riot gear. I'm quite sure that only some policeman in country side would bother to help with such trouble.
Slightly related. My mother visited Switzerland couple years ago. In the first day she dropped her train pass (for a week). It was worth around 400€ (~540USD) and it could have been used by anyone who was holding it. When she went to ask it from lost and found office the pass was already waiting for her there.

Oh yeah, I've lost several things over the years. Lost items almost always show up at a police station or train master office.

I suspect it might have something to do with your gender. I don't think a dude would get the same treatment.
Regardless though, its nice that they were looking put and trying to help.

Potentially. One of the officers was female. I'll just throw that out there. However, I think a lot of expatriate guys have similar experiences—as long as you're not near a base. And I don't live anywhere near one.

The Today is fucking awesome. If I had the space, I would totally pick one up. But alas, I have but one parking space in front of my townhouse style two bedroom apartment.

Just "Today." Have at. I LOVE Japanese 80s music/fashion, I love Hondas. Put them together? You get the Today. I want one bad.

Interesting. I would just assume being on foreign soil the locals wouldn't be as receptive to helping folks out. But, I'd like think that Japan is a rather forward thinking society, so maybe they're just nice people?

I think that Today JW1 is really small and was available with 2 and 3 cylinder engines. So probably not. It's still awesome.
And apparently you can race it.

Well, I also 1) speak Japanese 2) have lived here for six years and am naturalising, although I'm not a citizen yet. Combined with my gender, I think that definitely could make a difference. I do know that police are not so helpful in high touristy areas or near bases, because they're used to expatriate stupidities over and over.
I live in a Tokyo suburb, in a townhouse apartment facing a park. My neighbors are all families with small children. This is not a place where many expats are to be found, and those who are present, are obviously part of the community, since for the most part we're either teachers in the public schools (like me) or small business owners.

Hell, I'm sick of stupid Americans and I live in the U.S. I shudder to think of what others think of us.
I kind of envy you living in Japan. I always wanted to visit/live there (at least for a bit), but me being a cheap SOB has prohibited me from going.
