So guys, I just overheard my mom talking to my grandmother over the phone about finances and apparently my dad told her earlier today that since he took the Ody for more diagnostics this morning they told him it needs a new engine...for a fricking $5000. (from what I overheard, I'll update when I get more info.) That's a lot of money; the options here are to trade it in, fix it and give up travel for the next few years :P and idk (again, just info from overhearing...) I'm currently taking a college computer course, a full-day SAT Prep Course, doing summer hw, and practicing violin for next week's orchestra summer camp...I don't fricking have time to worry about this! I need some help...any ideas, Oppo?

Update: All I know is he's in a loaner Civic so far...

Why would it need a new engine? What happened?

There's a lot of dealers out there who would run 'diagnostics' and tell you that you need to do $5000+ repairs to an otherwise perfectly fine car.

I know back in the early 2000s, Ford F-150 dealers came under huge scrutiny because they were using a "black box" that would tell you all the problems of a car, and they would use it to sell a huge repair bill. If the people wouldn't pay it, they either wouldn't release the car or (worst case) they would deliberately mess with the calibrations and engine to make it actually break.

The other option, if the engine is actually toast, is to have an independent mechanic install a used engine from a salvage yard.

Yeah, I wanna swap a J37 but that would make the price even higher...probably...

Tip: add tags to posts that relate to eachother so they can be found, rather than expecting people to read back a week ago to figure out what's going on.

But yeah, looking at that, you might be screwed.

No problem, when you make a new post, there's a section at the bottom for you to add tags. Once you do, if people click them under the title, it will show all posts (in chronological order) with that tag. They can also search for that tag specifically.

If you click the tag "$kaybait" you will certainly see tons of Ford GT/GT40 porn, for example.

Eh, the van has 120K anyways so I guess its time to put money elsewhere...seems like every time we take it in for service it costs upwards of a grand...
