In the last !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , we compared the classic modernity of the 964 to the previous G-Series. This time around, we'll cover the final air-cooled incarnation of the 911; the 993, and compare it to the 964.

993(1995)
Curvy air-cooled sex
There's a reason why this generation is referred to as the best 911, other than the frequently stated fact that "it's the last of the air-cooled 911s, therefore it is the best.".
Quick fun fact: The 993 took many design cues from multiple previous cars. To list a few, the ill-fated 965 Turbo, 959, and the Panamericana that was given to Ferry Porsche for his 80th birthday:
Even so, it is a very beautiful car. With this new generation, the bumpers are integrated even further. As a result, the front and rear are much flatter than on any previous models(save for the Flachbau models, which I have reason to believe inspired the 993 in a way). The front end was also made flatter possible by the switch from round to poly-ellipsoid headlights. As a result, the design is strikingly beautiful with it's smoother lines giving off a harmonious overall impression.
Note that once again, the turn signals and fog lights are still integrated into the bumper. And those bumperettes I mentioned in the first segment, they're still here! And they're even minimally located on the front, separating the turn signals and fogs.
(Carrera 4 above and Carrera 4S below)
Along with this curvy new design, we finally get the first physical differences in the rear end. While the rear fenders/wheel arches became more pronounced like the Turbo models of old, this time around the wider body was only on the C2S, C4S, and TT(Twin Turbo).
Another change caused by the "S" models was the distinctive and optional "split"-rear deck lid that took the place of the classic singular lid; and like the 964, it was also electronically controlled to be a spoiler as well. While we have this Silver Carrera S above, take note of the revised taillights that have been angled more in shape with the design; the "PORSCHE" lettering is still there, but only to the keen eye, as it slowly fades away into obscurity. This would be the last time Porsche would have their name on the back of a 911, until it "retro"-actively returned on the 991.
Now, for the minor design changes and things that stayed the same. I forgot to mention this previously, but the 964 was the first 911 to come standard with dual exhaust outlets, the 993 carried that over. The elephant ear side mirrors were replaced with curvier ones to go with the new design. And the fuel cap is still where it was originally.
Believe it or not, but body-wise, the 993 and 964 share the same roof, and I think that might be the case with all 911s up to this point; as I've heard of some people doing sunroof deletes using roofs from one of the first four generations, provided the car your swapping to is of those generations. Overall, the 964 represented that departure from the 70s and 80s and what the 90s might look like; compared to it's predecessor, the 993 was not the next Porsche, rather, the new 911 for the 90s, and I'd even go so far to say what direction Porsche was taking for the indefinite future.
This 911 was the last complete "modern classic", by that, I mean not only the last air-cooled, but the last to follow a very tight-fit and close progression of design; as we'll see with the "Wassers". The 993 was and forever will be that last fresh breath of air that Porsche gave the world; elegance and muscle all in one package.
This is the best 911 interior, because it looks like a 911 interior, feels like one when you sit in it; but finally, all the creature comforts you wanted are finally modern and up to spec! It's an evolution of the 964's interior, with improved everything! Check it out, power door windows! That right there is the interior I wish I had in every car. It is simply fantastic.
(That's right! You had the option of a brick-phone for your 993!)
Enjoy some wallpaper worthy 993 photos:
While this 911 was simply magnificent and a great way to end the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Porsche's next iteration wasn't really the best way to enter the water-cooled era design-wise; as we will dive into next time and check out the "fried-egg" headlights of the 996!

The 993 is definitely my favorite generation of 911, along with the original one. Believe it or not, I'm not a big fan of the "impact bumper" generations that came between them, they mix of a rounded body and squared off bumpers somehow broke the smooth overall shape of both the original and the 993 generations. Now I need a miniature model of a 993 Carrera S...

Dat Ducktail
![]() 07/29/2014 at 19:03 |

Ducktail+993=Air-cooled orgy!! :O
![]() 07/29/2014 at 19:16 |
|
I still love me some (more attainable) 964.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 19:17 |
|
I think you'll eventually end up with one of each.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 19:18 |
|
I'll want all of them.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 20:17 |

I don't gusta the grey interior. I don't gusta it one bit.
Dat grey steering wheel and dash look horrid.
It looks so much better when black...
![]() 07/29/2014 at 20:51 |
|
I just don't like the grey wheel. Make it black and then I'm all set!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 20:56 |
|
You're half way there.
Make the wheel black and the top section of the dash black and I'll allow it.
Dat grey top dash looks gross. And it would reflect sunlight.
Actually strike everything I said. Grey should not be allowed inside air cooled 911s, PERIOD.
If not black then the interior should be sexy brown:

Red
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:04 |

OMG
It's not even red
It's pink
My eyes...
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:09 |

RED!!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:13 |
|
I like dat lower one!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:14 |
|
Also a fact: girls like white 911 cabrios with dark red interiors. It reminds them of red velvet cupcakes.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:16 |
|
Hate the black/red steering wheel...
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:21 |
|
You're on to something!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:29 |
|
I think now I will, realistically looking at buying a $200k exotic has opened my eyes.
VA SUCKS. The property tax an a Ferrari is going to be ridiculous. But the property tax on 2 or 3 Porsches (much less ridiculous)
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:29 |
|
I kind of like it for some weird reason. I wouldn't actually buy it though...
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:31 |
|
Much too "boy racer" to my eyes.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:31 |
|
I really can't think of a generation of 911's I don't like.
Even the 996.
Yes, I mean that too.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:32 |
|
wait WAT?
you have to pay prop tax on cars???
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:33 |
|
Would be cool for a girl racer
Stef should buy it
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:37 |
|
EXACTLY. IT SUCKS.
Just from some quick math in my head: let's say i buy a ~$200k Ferrari. I'll owe about $10k in property taxes for it.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:45 |
|
You need to move to Murica!!!
Do you have to pay sales tax in addition to the prop tax?
As far as I know I would only have to pay property tax on a vehicle that's registered to a business. My CPA handles all my personal and business taxes so she would know for sure.
The only personal property taxes that I am paying myself is for my home.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:45 |
|
996 is fine! It isn't a bad car! :)
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:57 |
|
It doesn't get any more 'Murican than living right outside of DC!!
Sales tax is separate from property tax (which is due yearly). Sales tax was actually just increased on cars from 3% to 4% this summer.
Right now it's just home+car for me. At least it isn't too bad for homes. About $1.09 per $100 of assessed value.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:58 |
|
LOL I forgot where you were. When I saw the prop tax thing my mind immediately assumed you were in Canada!!
I am very dissapoint in how VA does things!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 21:58 |
|
and a 996 turbo isn't too expensive! A really good daily driver candidate.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:05 |
|
Exactly! Go and get yourself one! :)
But I'd rather get a 997 C2 or C2S for that money.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:06 |
|
C'mon Rusto your mind is slipping haha!
VA is alright, but the way they run things is horrible. So much more expensive than it should be.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:08 |
|
exactly. I would do it, but once I'm spending that much money I'd rather get a newer 997. But once I'm spending THAT money I'd want a 997 turbo..... But once I'm spending that money..
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:13 |
|
Seriously slipping
But in my defense VA makes no god damn sense
All the commonwealth BS makes it basically Canada
VA makes my company pay a shit ton of money every year just to have the right to bid on VA gov contracts!
The state is more tax hungry than CA, and CA is basically a communist state! So that makes VA what, Super Communist?
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:24 |
|
Just go get yourself a 991 Turbo S and call it a day!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:40 |
|
EXACTLY.
Private contractors love setting up shop in Northern VA because on paper it seems cheaper than DC but if you look at the long term, you won't be saving much money.
VA is crazily tax hungry yet there are alotta people who don't even think twice about living here.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:41 |
|
If I'm spending THAT much I might as well sell my house/take out a huge loan and buy a P1.
I have a problem...
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:50 |
|
VA thinks it can charge as much taxes as it wants cause it's so OG Murican!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 22:53 |
|
We were one of the OG 13 colonies! You west coasters gotta respekt!!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 23:49 |
|
OG 13!!
![]() 07/29/2014 at 23:57 |
|
There's an old civil war fort behind my house.
DOESNT GET MORE OG THAN THAT.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 23:58 |
|
No way!
You need to take pics and make a post about it!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:06 |
|
I'll get that post up tomorrow! There's actually a guy living/preserving the house now. Right up the road is an old church dating back to the 1840's that was used as a hospital during the war.
Pretty cool stuff.
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:12 |
|
That is awesome!
Our history is that we used to have gold or something. Now we just have Hollywood and tech companies
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:22 |
|
Haha I'm hoping to wash/clay the car tomorrow so hopefully I'll get some pictures with the car in it.
Gold and tech companies aren't that bad, especially if you invested in them lol!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:30 |
|
You mean the 964 you just bought ?
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:32 |
|
Haha I actually have a lead on a 964 that supposedly only has 123k with 12k on a rebuilt engine that will apparently sell for low 20's.
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:34 |
|
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:43 |

I'm trying to!! We're meeting at his Indy shop this weekend. I'm not sure if I'm heading up to Bimmerfest in Maryland yet but I'm gonna reschedule if i end up going.

GOOD!!!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 00:59 |

Find me some nice west coast 964's. I have a feeling this seller doesn't really wanna sell.. His wife is making him so I'm guessing he won't play ball.
![]() 07/30/2014 at 01:25 |
|
if you really want me to I can!
So many cars here
![]() 07/30/2014 at 01:35 |
|
I'll see how this weekend goes. If it's bad I'll have you find some for me
![]() 07/30/2014 at 01:39 |
|
If I'm tasked with finding one hopefully I will find one that is low mileage, white, stick, and rear wheel drive.
That just sounds very fitting.
![]() 07/30/2014 at 01:41 |
|
Rusto I will eternally owe you if that happens!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 02:01 |

I'll start looking!
![]() 07/30/2014 at 02:29 |

I don't believe it!..;) :)

^^ "[..] for that money" is always the problem... I **can't** understand why, for example, someone wouldn't get the (2015) Nissan GT-R - instead of some other, insanely priced, racer; because what does 0.2-1.2 seconds, coming from the factory, mean... Really it's not worth, it can't be worth, an extra $20-200 thousand! xD
![]() 03/26/2015 at 15:36 |
|
Oh, pfft. Terrible, even for that time... Makes you wonder, who would agree to fork-out so much money: on some Japanese-looking plastic(s); lolz. ;-$

^^ "gross", lolo =)

This helped me on what engine i should get for my 917 since flat 12s are hard to get.
