I was going to buy a Miata, instead I'll be buying braces.

Braces for you, or for a kid?

Makes me think: I'm still surprised at how many working professionals that are getting invisible braces. Cost is down and the value of a straight smile seems to be very high in employer's minds nowadays. I'm lucky I got mine done years ago when I was young enough that it was a) cheap and b) acceptable to wear as a kid.

Just wait until you actually see a car with braces on it!

That sprite car would probably look good with them :p

braces are a racket

You have to wear your retainer for the rest of your life or your teeth go right back to where your genes said they should go.

For myself! I'm right at the age for a mid-life crisis car too.

I never bothered with a retainer after having my braces taken off. The orthodontist gave me the retainer, which I didn't wear, then lost. It's been about 15-16 years now. My teeth are still straight.

My teeth went all wonky after getting my wisdom teeth pulled a few years prior. Now I have to get braces to straighten them back out.

I might go with the invisible braces. It's going to cost 5 - 7 grand either way. That's what I had planned for a fun autocross vehicle. :(

How much do they cost nowadays? I'll be buying them for at least one of my kids in the next few years.

I hated my braces until I got them taken off (at 19). Once I saw the results I knew it was worth it.

How painful or uncomfortable is it getting them put on? Does it take hours and hours?

Not really. I got my braces off at 19 and I haven't worn my retainer since (almost 29). Teeth are still straight. Of course I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth, top ones haven't moved.

can't remember how long it took

It is a pain in the ass but not unbearable

You'll be sore afterwards but it's not so bad that you'll need pain killers

The big pain is having to constantly go in to get them adjusted ...

Depending on the complexity, you're looking at at least 3 grand, over 5 if you've got them on for a long time and/or have unique gear required.

Invisible braces used to be nearly twice as much, but now can be had for about 10% more. Unfortunately, not everyone can use them in place of metal braces and they usually require additional stuff, but if yo u can get them they're totally worth it. $500 more for invisible braces goes a long way at a job interview.

I actually got mine as a child on and off for under 2 grand, because my teeth moved twice as fast as they expected and we didn't have to pay for service long after that point.

Either way, choice in doctor is huge because you're going to have to be dealing with them repeatedly for years. Better make sure you can trust them.
