Jackie Kennedy Onassis would have been 85 years young on July 28th, so I figured I would resurrect a story of her favorite car. This story always stuck in my mind because I had a 73 BMW 3.0s, and it was one of my favorite cars of all time as well.

Kinja'd!!!

First off, she actually drove the car from 1974 until 1992. With the amount of money and fame she had she could have replaced it tens of times over, but no. Bought at Martin Motors BMW on the upper East Side in New York, and finally sold to her neighbor in Peapack, NY, she ordered it in Amazonasgrun, and she had it painted once. The 3.0l six was rebuilt after overheating in traffic (I had to do the same thing, these things like to DRIVE not sit in traffic).

And look at that leather. If you are wealthy and revered as a style icon, for you to tear around in an old Bimmer with original ripped leather, I salute you. That is actually probably the coolest part of this car. Anybody can drive a restored classic, alot of people do. This just sets it apart as a true driver, and makes Jackie all that more real of a person

So anyhow, the neighbor she sold it to finally sold it again for 57K in 2000, here is a screen grab.

Came with the original title too

Not a three series. Not even the predecessor of the Dreier.

My friend had one of these. It was really fun car except one thing. The car had an automatic transmission that was really reluctant using second gear.

It would have been really nice with a manual.

yeah mine was blue, with the 4 speed. One of the smoothest shifting trannies I have used. Throw was a bit long, but it was 1973

I don't remember what year was my friends car from but it had also quite interesting engine. It had BMW B220 3.3l marine engine converted back to automotive use. I don't know why some had swapped such engine there. Maybe the marine gearbox had broke.

This car makes the rounds in the Senior Six community (the E3 Liberation Army) from time to time. A year or so ago it was for sale by a dealer, Passing Lane Motors; it apparently sold, but who knows for how much:

At the end of the day, it's a big-bumper automatic E3 3.0-liter with the god-forsaken Solex-Zenith carbs in decent colors and tired leather.

I've had several E3s, ranging from a gorgeously original 1970 2800 and a horribly-original 1974 Bavaria, to my late and somewhat lamented hot-rod 1972 Bavaria (3.5/5-speed/LSD/Webers/full suspension). Great cars, really, and so ahead of their time. A good one today - and they can easily be made "good" as long as they aren't dissolving - is still a phenomenal car.
