I'm going on a trip,to Colorado in August, and well be renting a car. I'm worried that we'll end up with a shitbox like this. But, it's impossible, because my dad is an avis preferred member, so he can exchange if he gets a car he doesn't like. He travels to California a lot for work. The most common cars he gets are Ford Focus (hatchback), Fiat 500, Subaru Legacy, and Mazda 5.

I don't worry, because I have a discount with Enterprise where the "full size" but not really full size car costs only a couple bucks more than an economy car. "Full size" ends up meaning Altima, Malibu, etc. I've been taking Malibus since the CVT programming on the new Altima is way too economy-biased compared to the old one.

I always rent the shittiest and cheapest econobox they offer and I've never been disappointed, but that's because luck is usually on my side and I get upgraded due to them being out of the shitboxes. Once I was supposed to get an Aveo and I got a Beetle. Then I was supposed to get an Accent and I got a Kia Soul (which was pretty nice, surprisingly). Then, another time, I was supposed to get an Aveo and got a Chrysler 200. I'd have rather had the Aveo, I think.

A little shopping around will get you some fair discounts on rental cars. We used a discount from our Entertainment book (entertainment.com) to get our rental car two years ago (Altima) and paid about a third less than a buddy of mine who rented a Focus the same weekend for a similar trip. Last month we rented a Passat for a long road trip, but that was a special (corporate) deal my girlfriend got us.
Bottom line, don't just blindly reserve it and hope. A little research can net some great discounts, enough so that you might afford something more comfortable.

I just rented a Fiesta in South Dakota and was plesantly surprised when I found it wasn't the base trim but one of the fancy titanium trim cars. The only down side was that it was that neon green color.

You could try checking out RelayRides, you can find some interesting cars for cheap, it's kind of a crapshoot as to what will be available and where it is though. I just booked an NA Miata at $150/week.

I'll be in CO from the 21st to the 25th. We're flying into Denver, and then driving to Colorado Springs. We're going for my mom's friend's sons wedding. Are you in Denver?
