I'm sure many of you have been to an airshow or two in your life, but have you ever listened to the air traffic control (ATC) that coordinates it all?
Everyday during EAA AirVenture !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to the Air Boss as he coordinates traffic during the afternoon show (usually from about 2-6pm CDT).

When I went two years ago my buddy and I had a scanner so we listened in all week.
On Wednesday (?) the Goodyear Blimp arrived and was flying over the field. One of the performers was a Red Tail P-51. A C-5 was coming in that night too, but arrived early. The C-5 was asked to stay in a holding pattern above the field, and ATC told the P-51 pilot that it was higher than it looked.
The P-51 pilot comes on the radio and says 'I'm not worried about that, I don't want to hit the blimp!'
Blimp pilot comes on and says 'We'll move further away', and we hear the motors on the Goodyear Blimp roar as it slowly scoots away from the runway.

I was listening to arrivals yesterday and some guy was coming in from Seattle. The conversation between him and the tower went something like this:
ATC: ...turn your base abeam the numbers, clear to land on the [color] dot.
Pilot: Clear to land [color] dot.
ATC: That's a nice looking aircraft, where ya coming from?
Pilot: Seattle.
ATC: Seattle!?
Pilot: My butt hurts.

I usually have my scanner with me for airshow arrival/departure days, and listening to ATC just adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Definitely. It adds another dimension to the experience.
