Apparently, during President Obamas visit to CA, a woman in labor was prevented from crossing the street to the hospital because the route for the motorcade was between her and it, and was 100% secure. Many of the President's more...opinionated detractors are claiming that this is yet another example of the tyrannical marxist fuck-the-people evil regime that is the Obama administration, and that he somehow was directly responsible for what happened to this woman.

Now regardless of politics, it would seem that every president, from every party, for the last 50 years, has traveled in a highly secure motorcade. And it would seem to me that, in every case, these routes are shut down ahead of time and guarded highly, because as we know, the Secret Service takes no chances. My question is; how does one go about making a political statement about a politician they don't like, because the nature of something that goes with the office, and not the politician, had a negative affect on someone? Clearly the nature of the motorcade and the fact that the woman was not allowed to pass had nothing to do with which President was riding in the car.

Sorry if this is too political, but I read and heard from some very angry people, and this particular issue didn't really seem to have any merit.

People just like to bitch about stuff because they're ignorant. Yes, he hasn't been perfect but which president has been. Well I'm just not going to get involved or start anything.

I agree. There are plenty of reasons to dislike him, but if I were a political commentator, I would think that making a big deal out of this would detract from my credibility.

Yup, I think you pretty much got that right. They didn't shut off the street because it was Obama, they shut it off because it was the US president. Heck, my street was closed shut twice on the same day during world cup because the German team had to pass through it, and I don't think any of that was publicized in advance.

I could've just said that and spared myself a lot of typing. Well-put.

Well most make their money from making a story out of anything, it's ridiculous but it's the nature of the media. Reason A why I only watch BBC News when I want news. Don't need the bias of CNN and FOX.

I'm not saying anything political here at all, I'm just here for the motorcade discussion; I know for a fact that there is absolutely NO tolerance for any disruption in a Presidential motorcade whatsoever. My cousin drove an ambulance in a Presidential motorcade a year or so ago, and he told me they specifically instructed him to not stop under any circumstances, even if someone ran out in front if him. If someone were to do that, he was to run them over, no exception. As for the hospital, I'd be willing to bet that there was another entrance open for the hospital, it would be incredibly unwise for them to close down the whole thing, so she should've gotten instruction to the open entrance at the scene.

That has nothing to do with the President, it's just standard procedure.

Actually, motorcade routes have become more secure than in previous years. During the Bush regime administration, he made a speech in my hometown. This was circa 2006 or so (Freshman year of High School). His motorcade went right down the main street of my neighborhood. I was out riding my bike home from a friend's house. There were helicopters circling above. When I got to the main road, literally every motorcycle cop in town rode past me, followed by black towncars, then SUVs, then a limo, then more SUVs, then more towncars, then more motorcycle police.

In about 2009 or 2010, I was up in Cincinnati for a couple of days. Driving down the ring road, some cops pull out in front of us and flip on their lights. Stop traffic just before on on ramp as Joe Biden's motorcade merged onto the freeway. Once the last cop in the motorcade had joined the freeway, the cops started rolling forward, re-opening the road. Granted, they wouldn't let us pass them, but the road was only temporarily held up.

[president has done something] —> Symbol.check(PartyAffiliation)

PartyAffiliation = 'Mine'? Return, "The media needs to lay off the guy, he's doing as good a job as he can."

PartyAffiliation =/= 'Mine'? Return, "See? This is why we shouldn't have elected him."

What you see above you is the inner workings of a virus designed to infect the human brain. Once attached, the infectee will no longer be capable of objectively evaluating a given politician, as everything your team does is 'good' and everything (not your team) does is 'bad'. The end result is a nation full of people who are more susceptible to mass media manipulation, and less political power over all.

It is standard to shut down the route, but pretty poor planning to run the route right past a hospital. As for this:

And it would seem to me that, in every case, these routes are planned out and publicized weeks in advance, and then shut down hours ahead of time and guarded highly, because as we know, the Secret Service takes no chances.

They actually don't publicize the routes ahead of time. If they were publicized it would give assholes a chance to plan something. I don't believe that they are shut down very far ahead of time partly for the same reason and partly to minimize the traffic disruption.

But to answer your question, it isn't Obama's fault that the woman was not allowed across the road, that is standard procedure. It was poor planning on the part of the Secret Service to take that particular route.

Oops. Yeah, if I'd given that a little more thought, I would've figured out that they probably don't scream to the world when and where the pres. is being moved. My bad.
